Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this incredibly original and very correct 1928 Bentley 3.0 Litre Speed Red Label Vanden Plas Tourer.
This well known and highly regarded car retains all its original components including engine, gearbox, differential, front axle, dashboard and even some of the leather trim from 1928! It also retains its original Vanden Plas body.
This particular example has a known history from new and it is well documented in the fabulous book Vintage Bentleys in Australia.
The car was delivered in May 1928 to WG Dugdale from London in the UK. It was first registered as UX2474. The car spent the next 43 years in the UK, passing through the care of a small number of appreciative owners, including Innes Ireland who owned the car from 1968 to 1971. Ireland was a prominent race car driver who most notably won the 1961 US Grand Prix in a Lotus Type 21.
In 1971 the car was purchased by Dr James (John) Ebney, a Canadian doctor who had been working in Englands North. Ebney later returned home to Ontario, taking the Bentley with him.
This Bentley is well travelled and following Ebneys ownership the car spent time in the USA before heading back to the UK. It was then acquired by Gavin Sandford Morgan from Adelaide who imported it into Australia.
Robert McDermott facilitated the sale of the car to the current owners father in 1982. Over the next twenty one years this fabulous Bentley was used and enjoyed exactly as its makers intended. The current owner reflects nostalgically over great family memories made with this car. The current owner has written a document summarising the history of the car and in that he writes . . . our Bentley was very much a part of the family and it was regularly used for weddings, picnics, club events, various rallies and generally any conceivable excuse to drive this car. It featured in many wonderful weddings of family & friends, welcoming children & grandchildren, providing sights & sounds at picnics as well as evenings out in the country air. It formed a strong part of the ties that keep family & friends together through generations.
Following the passing of the cars owner in 2003 the decision was made to sell his beloved Bentley. It was sold to Peter Crauford from Moyston, Victoria in 2004. Crauford used and enjoyed his fabulous Bentley for over a decade before selling to well known UK based Bentley enthusiast and dealer William Medcalf in 2016. Through an incredible set of circumstances and a story too complicated and too long for this write up, the current owner was able to acquire his late fathers Bentley from Medcalf before it was shipped to the UK. And so began another chapter of the story of his involvement with this car that first started over forty years ago!
A few weeks later, it was time to bring the old Bentley home. He reflects . . . it was a freezing morning and my wife and I drove up to Moyston in her Jaguar XK120 Roadster to collect the car from Peter Crauford. After laying eyes on his car he couldnt believe how pleased he was to see it again. . . . I felt as though I had seen my fathers ghost, smiling at me, with the particular look of peaceful happy pride that I had almost forgotten. After a short drive it all came flooding back. I suppose thirteen years is a fairly long time not to drive a car like a 3.0 Litre Bentley, but in an instant I felt at home again with the central throttle and hand controls of timing and mixture . . . we roared along the Moyston Great Western Road, with the wind in our hair, the sun in our faces, the howl of the engine in our ears and the glow of joy in our hearts: It was great.
The car had been beautifully preserved and well maintained throughout Craufords ownership, however, the current owner decided to give the car a birthday. It was sent to Simon Elliot and his team at Derby Works who went through the car from one end to other to ensure it was ready to be reliably used and enjoyed for the foreseeable future.
The car was collected from Derby Works Mt Waverly workshop in March 2017.Over the next seven years the car has been regularly used and enjoyed. . . . we have had more miles, more adventures and more grateful pleasure than I could ever have hoped for. We have made many new friends and enjoyed sharing the car with so many people, from elder statemen who know exactly what the car is, to young boys and girls that just love the noise and theatre of seeing an old car on the street.
The car was displayed at Motorclassica as part of the celebration of 100 Years of Bentley in 2019. From the display of some twenty Bentleys, this car was awarded the Iron Ladies Trophy for the Bentley that best represented the spirt of WO Bentley.
After being part of the current owners family for almost thirty years he has decided the time is right for this wonderful Bentley to start a new journey.
We are absolutely delighted that he has entrusted Oldtimer Australia to find the next custodian for this car.
Today this 1928 Bentley 3.0 Litre Speed Red Label Vanden Plas Tourer presents and drives superbly. The car presents with just the right amount of patina. This is a car that has been used and enjoyed over the years. It has never been restored, rather beautifully preserved and regularly maintained.
The first thing you will notice is of course the colour. Finished in maroon with black guards and a maroon fabric body, this car is a refreshing change to the ubiquitous green so often seen on WO Bentleys. The paint work presents well, with minor wear and tear evident, its overall presentation being consistent with a car that does get driven. The fabric is in excellent condition. All of the external trim, including the brightwork presents similarly well.
The black wire wheels and plated Bentley spinners are in good condition and present well. The wheels are shod with Excelsior 5.00 / 5.25 21 tyres all around.
Inside the cabin this car is also beautifully presented. The condition of the interior is consistent with the exterior. Everything is just nice, showing light wear and tear consistent with use. Whilst the front seats and door cards have been reupholstered at some stage, the rear seats look to retain original leather from 1928! There are no rips or tears to the refreshed upholstery, though the original leather shows some cracking and minor damage. You wouldnt touch it though . . . so cool! The carpet like material on the back of the seats may well also be original and it shows some wear and tear. The carpets are in generally good condition. The instruments and controls are well presented and look to be in working order.
The soft top would have been replaced at some stage and whilst it has had a few repairs it is in reasonably good condition. It fits quite well and is relatively easy to put up and down. The cover that fits over the soft top when down is old and in average condition. There is a replacement that will come with the car, though the current owner prefers the patina of the original.
Simon Elliotts Derby Works has recently completed an engine rebuild and as a result the car drives superbly. Even prior to the rebuild this car had a reputation as being a great performer, often mistaken for having a 4¼ litre engine. The car goes hard and it has the most fantastic and very distinctive baritone exhaust note. For its day this was a fast car, but even today its performance is lively and the car has absolutely no trouble keeping up with modern traffic. The brakes are certainly nothing like what you are used to on a modern car and the gear changes take some getting used to, however, once you do it provides the driver with a very rewarding driving experience. The car handles well and it feels surprisingly tight on the road.
This is a car that has many stories and if only it could talk!
As part of the rich tapestry of its history it is noted that Innes Ireland drove Denis Hulme around Silverstone for the Drivers Parade at the 1969 British Grand Prix. Hulme had qualified his Cosworth Ford DFV powered McLaren M7A in third place, but unfortunately was forced to retire after 27 laps with electrical problems. 31 years later the Bentley appeared in another Grand Prix Drivers Parade when the current owner drove Heinz-Harald Frentzen around Albert Park at the 1997 Australian Grand Prix. The Bentley brought more luck to Frentzen than it did for Hulme all those years ago. After qualifying second on the grid Frentzen drove his Williams-Renault to 8th place.
Incredibly, this Bentley is now close to 100 years old.

Background:
The Bentley motor car company was founded back in 1919 by brothers WO and HM Bentley. The Bentley brothers were involved in the motor industry having acquired the agency to sell French built DFP (Doriot, Flandrin & Parant) cars in 1912, however, they desperately wanted to build their own cars.
WO Bentley had established himself as a brilliant engineer during World War I when the French made DFP in which he competed, achieved a number of wins in various races and hill climbs. He was one of the first engineers who realised the advantage of using aluminium to create pistons. W.O Bentley was discharged from the army in 1919 and he set about creating his own car. His experience with aircraft engines proved an excellent starting point. He was also heavily influenced by two pre-war designs, the 1914 Grand Prix Mercedes and the 1913 Coupe de lAuto Peugeot.
Bentley developed a 3.0 litre monobloc engine which featured four valves per cylinder, twin spark plugs and twin magnetos. He made extensive use of aluminium and magnesium which were quite exotic materials in the 1920s, especially for road going cars. The first prototype, EXP1, was tested by The Autocar and received a glowing report. It was described as For the man who wants a true sporting type of light-bodied car for use on a Continental tour where speed limits are not meant to be observed the 3 Litre Bentley is undoubtedly the car par excellence.
The second prototype, EXP2, made its debut at the 1919 Olympia motor show. The new Bentley 3.0 Litre attracted a lot of attention however it wasnt until September 1921 that the first model rolled of the production line. Between the 1919 motor show and September 1921 much work had been done to further refine the chassis. EXP2 was the first Bentley to record a race win at Brooklands on May 16th 1921. Bentley continued to use it for further testing in 1921 and 1922 before it was sold in 1923. EXP2 still exists today and is the oldest surviving Bentley.
Initially, production of the Bentley 3.0 Litre was slow but they got the formula right and their cars proved to be luxurious, reliable and fast thus attracting buyers from the elite of society. it didnt take long for the order books to be filled with names of wealthy and aristocratic clients, including Prince George (later the Duke of Kent), the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) and the Duke of York, later King George VI.
Just like other manufactures in that period, Bentley supplied the engine, drive train, suspension and chassis, letting the client decide which coachbuilder they wanted to use to supply the body. Bentley offered three versions of their 3.0 Litre and they were identified by the colour of the badge on the radiator the blue label, the red label and the green label. The blue label was the standard engine, the red label was powered by a higher compression engine and the green label was the high-performance model. Bentley had great confidence in their cars and offered a five year warranty on the blue and red label model. The green label, however, only came with a one year warranty because it really was a race car.
The cars were also incredibly successful on the race track with Bentley achieving the ultimate success winning Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930. The Bentley 3.0 Litre was able to beat the the much smaller and more nimble Bugattis, prompting Ettore Bugatti to call it the fastest lorry in the world.
The difficult economic times in the late 1920s had a major impact on Bentley and they stopped motor racing soon after winning Le Mans in 1930 and ultimately fell into receivership in 1931. Rolls-Royce acquired the assets of Bentley in late 1931. In this period Bentley produced some fabulous motor cars including the 3.0 Litre, 4½ Litre, Blower Bentley, 6½ Litre and 8.0 Litre models that are all today highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors all over the world. The first new Bentley produced following Rolls Royces acquisition was the Bentley 3½ Litre which evolved into the Bentley 4¼ Litre. Bentleys of this era are also known as Derby Bentleys as they were built at Rolls Royces factory located in Derby in the north of England.
The Bentley 3.0 Litre was built from 1921 through until 1929 and in total 1,622 examples were built. This included three experimental models, 1,088 3.0 Litre models, 513 Speed Tourers and 18 Super Sports.

1928 BENTLEY 3 LITRE Vanden Plas Sports Tourer

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this fantastic 1983 Aston Martin V8 Oscar India.
The Heritage certificate on file confirms this car was built on the 7th September 1983 and it left the factory on 11th October 1983. The car was originally delivered in storm red (paint code 9017) with a fawn pipe burgundy interior (trim code VM.3234/DV6171), a colour scheme the car still carries today. The car retains its original matching numbers engine.
The Heritage Certificate also states this car was delivered with Weber carburettors, Avon tyres, beige with burgundy edged carpet, beige leather headliner and a miles per hour speedometer.
This car is a highly desirable later model Oscar India with the V580 Series engine and BBS wheels. It also has the blanked out radiator grill that was standard on the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Like the majority of the Aston Martin V8s built, this car is equipped with a Chrysler Torqueflite three speed automatic transmission.
The documentation on file confirms that this Aston Martin was delivered through Victor Wilson Limited in Edinburgh, Scotland to its first owner, Mr M Carney from Glasgow, Scotland. It was first registered as MAT 78.
Around 1989 the car was sold to Mr M Blackall, an Englishman temporary living and working in Belgium as the Area Director of Operations for a major hotel group. At that time the car was registered as A946FSF. The car spent the next two years in Belgium before the owner moved back to the UK and took the car with him. In 1993 he upgraded to an Aston Martin V8 Volante and this car was sold to Mr M Walker from Edinburgh in June 1994. In September 1996 the car was advertised for sale by the Murray Motor Company in Edinburgh and sold to Mr R Forrester from Cairneyhill, a small village just north of Edinburgh. In 2000 the Murray Motor Company advertised the car for sale again and subsequently sold it to Mr Keenan from Apperley, Gloucestershire, UK. The car was registered with the registration A4 SFK. These UK plates are still fitted on the car.
The current owner, who has an extensive and eclectic collection of cars, acquired this Aston Martin in the UK in mid 2006 and subsequently imported it into Australia. There is an Import Approval on file dated 31st July 2006.
Shortly after arriving into Australia the car was repainted in its original colour of storm red. The car has not been driven any distance since arriving in Australia. It has essentially been in static storage for some fifteen years, though from time to time it was started and driven a short distance. It was last started and driven about five years ago prior to arriving to us.
Since arriving at Oldtimer Australia the car has been recommissioned by classic car specialist Steve Ward from SJ Classics and it runs and drives well. It may require some further fettling to be a reliable driver, but the car has done everything as expected when we have had it out on the open. From the first turn of the key when awoken from its hibernation, the big V8 engine burst to life and it sounds fantastic. Not surprisingly the car seems to get better and better the more it has been driven. The oil pressure is good and engine has loads of power on tap. The gear changes are smooth up and down the box and the car handles, steers and stops as one would expect.
Today the odometer reads 69,688 miles, which based on the information on file, is genuine.
Even though the car carries what is now considered an older repaint, the paint still presents very well. As a result of the car not being driven since it was repainted, the paint has never been exposed to the harsh Australian sun. It retains a deep gloss and a strong depth of colour. There are only two small defects in the paint. There are two very small chips on the boot lid and there is also a small scrape on the edge of the drivers door. Subsequent to our photo shoot, these defects have been touched up using original touch up paint supplied with the car.
All the glass, which looks to be original, and external trim is in very good condition. The same can be said for the bumpers and the other bright work on the car. It is all in very good to excellent condition.
The BBS wheels, which are a real feature on these later Aston Martin V8s present like new with no curb rash. They are shod with Avon Turbosteel 70 tyres, size 235/70/15. The thread on the tyres still present like new, however they are date stamped 4400 (week 44, 2000), and should really be replaced on age.
Open the door and you feel like you are stepping back in time. The interior has been beautifully preserved and is in beautiful condition. It is also very English! The fawn leather seats are in excellent condition with no cracks or tears in the leather. They are comfortable and still provide plenty of support. The rear seats appear to have hardly been used. All the carpets are in excellent condition. The dashboard presents like new. The timber veneer inserts are in excellent condition as is all the leather. Even the top of the dash is still in excellent condition. The instruments are all clean and present well. There is a row of push switches on the centre console and you often see these with faded text. Not in this car. The text is as clear as it was on the day the car left the factory.
In the boot everything is clean and tidy and there is an original spare wheel present.
Open the bonnet and you are presented with a magnificent looking V8 engine. It is hard to miss the Aston Martin Lagonda text on the valve covers and of course there is the plate with the name of the person who assembled the engine. The engine in this car was built by Fred Walters. All very Aston Martin! Everything presents as one would expect. The engine is bay is neat, clean and tidy.
The underside of this car presents well. There is light surface corrosion on some of the components, however, this is not a typical English car underneath. The overall presentation is consistent with a 41 year old car that has been well cared for.
Accompanying this car is a comprehensive history file dating back to new, which includes the original service book.
This car has an incredible presence and it presents fabulously in the striking colour of storm red.

Whilst Aston Martin produced some wonderful cars in their early years business, was always a struggle and the company was severely disrupted during both World War I and II. The company went bankrupt on more than one occasion and has endured many different owners throughout its history.
David Brown acquired Aston Martin in February 1947 and the first car produced during his ownership was the Aston Martin 2 Litre Sports, later known as the DB1, which was built in extremely limited numbers from 1948 to 1950. This was succeeded by the Aston Martin DB2 in 1950, which featured a new double overhead cam straight six engine of 2.6 litre (2580 cc) capacity, and was a car that really put post war Aston Martin on the map. The David Brown era was arguably Aston Martins finest with the company winning LeMans in 1959 and the sixties producing the legendary DB4, DB5 and DB6 models.
The first of the Newport Pagnell designed cars, the DBS, was introduced in 1967. The DBS was initially powered by Aston Martins tried and true 6 cylinder engine as the companys new V8 engine was not ready.
From September 1967 through until May 1972 Aston Martin produced 829 DBS chassis. One of these was used in a crash test and 26 of these were later fitted with a V8 engine which leaves a total of 802 six cylinder Aston Martin DBS. Of these 802 cars, 621 were right hand drive and 181 left hand drive. The DBS was available with a five speed ZF manual gearbox or an automatic gearbox or. Interestingly, 317 of the right hand drive cars were fitted with the five speed manual gearbox. It is understood that Aston Martin only built circa 70 right hand drive examples equipped with the Vantage engine.
In September 1969 the DBS was superseded by the DBS V8, powered by the all new 5.3 litre V8 engine which was finally ready for production. The DBS V8 remained in production through until April 1972 and circa 400 cars were built. It was then renamed and became the Aston Martin V8, which became a great success for the marque. The Aston Martin V8 was produced for 17 years, with production finally coming to an end in 1989. Just over 2,000 cars were built, plus the Volantes and Vantages.
In October 1978 Aston Martin introduced the Aston Martin V8 Series 4, otherwise known as the Oscar India (Oscar India = October Introduction, from the phonetic alphabet). The car now sporting burr walnut trim, a blanked off bonnet scoop and a revised boot lid and rear wings to create a sculpted spoiler was visually very similar to the Vantage. The car remained in production through until 1985 and only 352 examples were produced.

1983 ASTON MARTIN V8 Oscar India

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a UK delivered, factory right hand drive 1958 Jaguar XK150 Drophead Coupe.
The Heritage Certificate on file confirms this is a factory right hand drive Drop Head Coupe which was manufactured on the 17th June 1958. The car was originally pearl grey with a light blue interior and a blue soft top. Henlys in London is mentioned as the original distributor of the car and Guy Salmon from Thames Ditton in Surrey as the original dealer. The car left the factory on 27th June 1958 and was first registered in Surrey, UK with the registration number 10 GPC.
The Heritage Certificate also confirms this car originally had a 3.4 litre engine with a manual transmission with overdrive. Currently the car is fitted with a 3.8 litre engine, still with a manual transmission with overdrive.
The car is also documented in fabulous book, The Jaguar XK in Australia (1985) by John Elmgreen and Terry McGrath. The book states it was sold new to RS Bruce & Co. Unfortunately, the subsequent early history of this car is not known. It found its way to Australia by at least 1965. At that time it was registered in NSW.
In 1999 the car was acquired by Nathan Barker from Maroubra in NSW. A pre-purchase inspection report on file confirms that at that time the car was in a poor condition. He purchased the car and he decided to restore it. He engaged the services of Brookvale Body Repairs Pty Ltd in Sydney. They stripped the car down to bare metal, executed the necessary repairs and repainted the car. All that work was completed in April 2001.
This Jaguar XK150 Drophead Coupe was acquired by its current lady owner in April 2005 at auction. She acquired the car, aptly named English Rose with the intention to use it, which is what she has done. When she acquired the car the odometer read 37, 662 miles. Throughout her 18 years of ownership she has used the car for weekend outings and car club events. In that time she has travelled around 10, 000 miles in the car.
The car has been well maintained and regularly serviced in her ownership. Her philosophy was if there was any work that needed to be done to the car then it was done. Up until 2019 all the servicing was done by All Classic Car Restorations in Brookvale (Sydney), NSW. The owner then moved to Queensland and the subsequent servicing of the car was done by HP Engines on the Sunshine Coast.
Today the odometer reads 47, 953 miles and English Rose can be best described as a very well presented example. The paint presents exceptionally well given its age and it still has a strong depth of colour and a high gloss. Upon closer inspection you will notice a few small stone chips here and there consistent with a car that has been used and enjoyed. The most noticeable blemish is a stone chip on the right front guard, close to the headlight surround. All the chrome work on the car is in good condition with some very light pitting evident on some components. The balance of the external trim, including the lights and lenses are in good condition. This includes the glass which is also in good condition with no evidence of any cracks or delamination.
The wire wheels are a real feature on this car and they are in very good condition. They are currently shot with Toyo Teo Plus 205/ 70R16 tyres which are date stamped 0113 (week 1, 2013). Whilst the condition of the tyres is still good, they are probably nearing the end of their life based on age.
The black soft top is in good condition and it fits well.
Inside the car the interior is just a nice place to be, presenting with just the right amount of patina. The black upholstery is the perfect colour contrast with red exterior. The front seats are still firm and provide ample support. The leather is in good condition with no rips or tears evident but the leather is slightly cracked and faded in certain areas. A good leather doctor could improve this with a few hours work. The rear seats are in similar condition, but with no cracks. The door cards and dashboard are in good condition as is the carpet. All the instruments are in good working order, with the exception of the temperature gauge. The car has been fitted with an aftermarket temperature gauge that sits under the dash. This was most likely done as a safety measure.
Under the bonnet, the engine bay is clean and presentable, but it would benefit from a detail. There is also a key type battery isolator fitted.
The boot is clean and tidy though the boot strut is missing. There is a spare wheel and modern jack.
Whilst the car presents really well, it could easily be taken to the next level if one chose to do so. Personally, we love the look and feel of the car and would do a few minor things to improve its overall appearance whilst continuing to use and enjoy it just as it is.
This is definitely a top down car and it is out on the open road where this Jaguar feels right at home. The car is fitted with an electric choke which is needed to start the car. The car does start at pretty much first crank and once running the choke can be turned off. The car then quickly settles into a smooth idle and you take in those typical XK sounds. The raspy exhaust note is quintessential British sports car. The engine sounds good and feels strong. First impressions are good. The gearbox is smooth and the gear changes are easy, which isnt always the case with a Moss box. The brakes work well and the steering is direct and responsive. Under hard acceleration the car does seem to hold back a little and we therefore think it would benefit from a tune.
English Rose has been much loved and part of the family for the last 18 years so it is with a heavy heart that the car is now offered for sale.
The XK150 Drophead Coupe is arguably the best XK to own.

Background:
The Swallow Sidecar Company was founded in 1922 by William Lyons and William Walmsley. In 1934 Lyons formed SS Cars Limited to effectively take over the operation from Walmsley. The SS brand was quite successful; though they had a reputation for having more show than go. The Jaguar name first appeared as a model name on an SS 2½ Litre Sports Saloon introduced in 1936. For political reasons, Lyons changed the name of his company to Jaguar Cars in 1945.
Whilst the SS100 is indeed a fabulous car, it was the launch of the legendary Jaguar XK120 at the London Motor Show in 1948 that really put Jaguar on the map. The car caused a sensation, which persuaded Jaguar founder and design boss William Lyons to put it into production. The 120 in its name referred to its 120 mph top speed, which made the XK120 the worlds fastest production car in its day. It was available in two open versions, first as the roadster (designated OTS, for open two-seater), then also as a drophead coupé (DHC) from 1953. The car was also available as a closed or fixed head coupé (FHC) from 1951.
The XK120 was succeeded by the XK140 which was launched in late 1954 and sold through until 1957. Whilst the XK140 looked similar to the XK120 there were in fact many subtle and indeed important differences. The XK140 featured a more spacious cabin and had improved brakes, suspension and steering. Visually the car had American style bumpers with overriders, a different grille (that had fewer, thicker vertical bars), a chrome strip on the bonnet & boot and an emblem Jaguar Winner Le Mans 1951-3 also on the boot.
The final iteration of the XK was the XK150 that was released in 1957. Whilst its family resemblance to its forbearers is obvious, the XK150 was in fact a very different car. Most noticeable was the change to a one piece windscreen and the smoother wing line from the front to the rear of the car. Cabin space was significantly improved making the XK150 a far more comfortable car to drive. Mechanically the first XK150s were similar to the XK140s, however, an SE variant with a modified cylinder head giving more power and an S variant with triple SU carburettors giving even more power were soon available. In 1959 engine capacity was increased from 3. 4 litres to 3. 8 litres. The very first XK150s with the 3. 4 litre engine fitted produced 190hp. With the increase in engine size the amount of horsepower also grew. The top-of-the-line XK150S 3. 8 was fitted with triple SU HD8 carburettors and it produced 265hp. The same amount of horsepower as the later E-types.
Like the XK120 both the XK140 and XK150 were offered in three body style being the roadster, drop head coupe and fixed head coupe.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this rare and highly collectible Porsche 356 B Super 90 Roadster by Drauz.
The 356B Roadster was essentially the successor of the famous 356 A Speedster. Porsche built 2,649 356 B Roadsters of which only a very small number were fitted with the desirable Super 90 engine, making this an extremely rare car.
The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity on file confirms this car was delivered new to the USA. It has a birth date/delivery date of 8th July 1960 and it was delivered new in silver metallic (paint code 6006) with a black leatherette interior. The Heritage Certificate notes the following options: Dunlop tyres, roll bar, tonneau cover and one pair of safety belts. It also confirms that this car retains its original matching numbers engine and gearbox.
The cars American history is not known, other than it resided in McLean in the state of Virginia. There is a Certificate of Title from the Commonwealth of Virginia on file dated 16th October 2002 in the name of David Decker.
Garry Rainsford, from Rainsford Collectable Cars in Adelaide acquired the car from Decker in 2005. There is a Vehicle Import Approval on file dated 15th August 2005.
When the car arrived in Australia it was assessed by Rainsford who decided to have the engine reconditioned by Porsche specialist Mark Poole Motorsport in Edwardstown, SA. This included the installation of a new crankshaft, a new camshaft, larger 1,720cc pistons and barrels, new valves and the installation of an oil cooler. The odometer read 24,326 miles when all this work was done.
At the time Rainsford decided to convert the car to right hand drive. This task was also entrusted to Porsche specialist Mark Poole Motorsport in Edwardstown, SA. There is a letter on file from Tonkin Engineering confirming the conversion was done to the requirements of the Vehicle Standards Bulletin No. 4 dated October 1991 issued by Australian Motor Vehicle Certification Board and titled Steering Conversions for Left Hand Drive Vehicles.
The car was then sold to its current owners father in December 2007. He continued to make improvements to his Porsche acquiring parts from suppliers like Stoddard in the US and utilising the services of local Porsche specialists.
In 2008 four new chrome rims were fitted to the car and for safety reasons a third brake light, discretely hidden behind the grill, was installed in 2009. At that time the seatbelts were also replaced.
The car was last serviced by Porsche specialist Buik Motorworks in Keswick, SA in January 2023 and at that time the odometer read 30,018 miles. They also replaced the fuel pump on the car in June 2023 and they reconditioned the carburettors in February 2024.
Today the odometer reads 30,095 miles.
Walking up to the car you are immediately impressed by what you see. The 356B Roadster is one of the prettiest of all 356s and silver is perfect colour for the car as it accentuates all the details perfectly. The blue soft top also provides a nice contrast but as we all know these cars look best with the top down!
Generally, the paint is in good condition though upon closer inspection we did find a few imperfections. From say a meter it looks perfect, however, there are some cracks in the paint on the top/front of the left door, there is a very small bubble near the lower edge of the bonnet and a small chip on the lower section of the left front guard. There are some minor scratches on both of the door glass.
The external trim on the car is minimalistic, however, everything is in similarly good condition to the paint.
When photographing the car we noticed that the front bumper was slightly out of alignment. This has since been fixed.
The wheels are in excellent condition with no evidence of any kerb rash or other damage. The only thing we have noticed are some very small scratches on the black around the Porsche logo on the rear left wheel. The wheels are shod with Pirelli P6 tyres, size 195/60/R15. The tyres are date stamped 2208 (week 22, 2008) and whilst they are still in good condition they do need to be replaced on age if the new owner is planning on doing some serious driving with the car.
The soft top is in excellent condition and fits well. Even the rear window, which quite often discolours if it has been exposed to the sun for too long, is still in very good condition. Raising and lowering the soft top is an easy job that can be done by one person.
Inside the cabin this car presents beautifully. The blue leather seats and the top of the dashboard create a perfect contrast to the silver metallic dashboard. The seats are comfortable and provide amble support. The upholstery is in very good condition with no evidence of any rips or tears in the leather. The Porsche branded lap belts are a nice touch. The dashboard, whilst simple presents well and all the instruments are clear and appear to be in good working order.
This car looks fantastic and we were genuinely excited to take it out for a test drive to see if it would live up to our expectation. We are happy to report it most certainly did!
The car is still running its original 6 volt electrical system but it starts easily, even from cold and the engine quickly settles into a smooth idle. For a cold start the car does require the use of the choke.
Once out on the open road the first thing you notice is how responsive this car is to the slightest touch of the accelerator. Porsche 356s look cool, but many of them have more show than go! This car has plenty of go, which is not surprising given the relatively recent engine rebuild (based on mileage) and upgrade to 1,720cc. The four speed gearbox is very smooth both up and down the box. The linkages feel tight ensuring precise and direct gear changes. The car feels solid on the road and there are no obvious rattles. The steering is direct and the suspension is firm ensuring that the car steers and handles really well. The only area that may require attention are the brakes. They work well, pulling the car up quickly and in a straight line, though you get a shudder through the pedal.
This Porsche 356B Roadster is ready for its next owner to use and enjoy and it would most certainly be a welcome guest at any Porsche event or any classic car event for that matter.
Accompanying the car is an excellent history file which goes back to 2005 when the car was imported into Australia. It contains, amongst other documents, the US title, Australian Import Approval and a document certifying the conversion to RHD. Also accompanying the car is a spare wheel, jack and a box of old and new spare parts.

Background:
The Porsche story is a fascinating one and its roots go back to the 1930s when Professor Ferdinand Porsche was instrumental in the design of the first Volkswagen and also Auto Union race cars. By 1939 he had built three Porsche cars to compete in the 800-mile race from Berlin to Rome. Unfortunately, the race was cancelled due to the war and Porsche was forced to focus on supporting the German war effort, however, he had always wanted to build his own cars. In 1944 Porsche was forced to leave Stuttgart and he set up a small operation in Gmünd, Austria. Soon after the Porsche family and many of their engineers were captured and sent to jail. Ferdinand Porsches son. Ferdinand junior, or Ferry as he was known, was released six months later and he returned to Gmünd to rebuild the family company. Things moved quickly and Porsche was involved with cars again and in mid-1948 the first Porsche 356 was built. It is understood Porsche built some 50 aluminium bodied cars by hand in their small factory at Gmündbefore relocating back to Stuttgart, Germany in 1949.
Instead of building the body of the car himself Porsche decided to collaborate with an old partner, the body manufacturing company Reutter who had both the expertise and infrastructure to mass produce the bodies for the 356 coupe and cabriolet.
Nowadays, the first series of the 356, built from 1948 through until 1955 are known as the 356 Pre A.
In 1955 the 356 A was introduced. The internal factory designation for this model was Type 1 which was quickly adapted by enthusiasts who referred to the 356 A as the T1. The 356 A became available as a coupe, cabriolet and a Speedster. Buyers had the choice between a 1,300cc and a 1,600cc engine and later the Super version.
A second revision of the 356 A was introduced early in 1957. It became known as the Type 2 (or T2). Late 1958 the Speedster was replaced by the Convertible D which was now build by coachbuilder Drauz. In late 1959 the 356 A was replaced by the 356 B. The 356 B was available as a coupe, cabriolet and roadster, with each body style available with a number of different engine options.
The last revision of the 356 was the 356 C introduced for the 1964 model year.
The 356 remained in production through until 1965 and evolved into one of the most successful sports cars ever built.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a rare, factory right hand drive 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider (Tipo 101.19).
The documentation on file from Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo confirms this factory right hand drive Giulia Spider was delivered new on the 24th March 1965 and its market destination is noted as Rome, Italy. The exterior colour is noted as grigio grafite and the interior colour is noted as rosso.
The car came to Australia very early in its life and possibly from new. The cars early Australian history is known back to the very early 1970s. The previous owners father acquired the car around that time and it remained in the same family for the next 50 years. The previous owner has fond memories of the car and even remembers that around 1972/1973 the cylinder head needed to be repaired and his father showed him how to set the valve clearances. It was also around that time that the car was repainted white.
This Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider was used and enjoyed until the early 1980s and then it was parked up. It was understood to have been last registered in 1982. The car still retains a NSW registration sticker from January 1980 on the passengers quarter glass window. The registration number is noted as BMK 773. The sticker also notes the engine number which is correct to the car today.
The car sat for around 25 years until c 2007 when it was relocated from the garage to the carport. This was supposed to be a short term solution and at some stage after that the car was stripped of all its trim, lights etc with the intention of repainting the body. Some new parts had been ordered and the seats had been retrimmed, but still in the bags they had arrived in from the upholsterer. Unfortunately, that was all that was done. Life got in the way and the car sat for the next 10 years, patiently waiting for someone to complete the work.
This car, along with a disassembled Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale, were advertised for sale through the Alfa Romeo Owners Club in 2018. The current owner saw the advert and immediately pounced. After getting some information about the history and the condition of both cars he made an offer to purchase the pair. His offer was accepted and so his journey began.
Accompanying the cars were boxes of spare parts. His first challenge was to figure out which parts belonged to which car. Once everything was sorted, he decided to sell the Sprint Speciale and focus his energy on restoring the Giulia Spider.
He engaged the services of highly regarded restoration specialists Concourse Automotive Restorations in Geelong, Victoria to do the body and paint. First step in the process was to take the car to well respected Italian car specialist Auto Sprint Motors in Brunswick East, Victoria. They removed all the mechanical parts from the car and it was then trucked down to Geelong. The body was then blasted. As the car had been sitting outside under a carport for many years it was no surprise that various rust repairs were needed. In fact, they were substantial! The owner of the car is very particular and wanted everything done just right. As a result, no short cuts were taken and what needed to be done was done. In total just over $110,000 was spent on the body and painting some of the mechanical components, including the suspension, between late 2019 and mid 2023.
After Auto Sprint Motors had removed all the mechanical components from the car everything was assessed. Essentially, everything had to be fully rebuilt. The engine was completely rebuilt with new pistons, cylinders, and bearings. The cylinder head was reconditioned and fitted with new valves and valve guides. The gearbox was reconditioned with new synchros. The suspension, brakes, radiator were all totally rebuilt. In excess of $50,000 was spent on the mechanical work.
The interior was completely redone by Dark Engergy Kustom Trim Works in South Geelong. The seats were refurbished and reupholstered, the door cards and the top of the dashboard was reupholstered, new carpets were fitted and a new soft top was sourced and installed. All the instruments were removed from the car and reconditioned.
If new parts were needed during the restoration they were mostly sourced from Classic Alfa in the UK.
The restoration was completed by mid 2024 and since then the car has been fettled and post restoration bugs ironed out.
The end result is just STUNNING and a credit to everyone involved. Whilst the car was actually painted some years ago, the car has only travelled a few hundred miles since the restoration was completed. As a result the paint work presents exceptionally well today and defects are hard to find. All of the external trim is similarly well presented.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider / Giulia Spider is one of Pininfarinas finest designs. They are timelessly elegant and quite small cars. The shape carries colour very well and as a result they look fantastic in any colour, but . . . grigio grafite is about as good as it gets! It looks very classy and creates a perfect contrast with the rosso interior. It also accentuates all the chrome work on the car, which is beautifully presented.
The interior presents essentially like new. Everything is crisp and clean and the rosso upholstery just pops.
Under the bonnet everything is very neat, clean and tidy. The boot is similarly well presented and you will find a rubber boot mat, jack and correct tool kit.
This little Alfa requires a full choke to start from cold. The 1,570cc 4 cylinder catches pretty much at the first turn of the key. There is a slight hesitation as the Weber carbs take their first breath, however, everything smoothes out quickly. As the car warms you can back the choke off. When you blip the throttle you get an almost instant response from the engine and the raspy exhaust note brings a smile to your face. The team at Auto Sprint have done a great job and this car is an absolute delight to drive. The engine has plenty of power on tap and the car pulls strongly through the rev range. The gearbox is tight and the gear changes are firm and direct. The car is firm on the road and there are no rattles or squeaks. In conclusion, it performs every bit as good as it looks!
Accompanying the car is a thick file of receipts from the restoration, a detailed email from the previous owner describing the history of the car, jack and correct tool kit.

Background:
The Alfa Romeo story began in June 1910 when A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) was founded in Milan, Italy. Their first car, the 24hp, was a great success and the Alfa name became synonymous with motor racing in the early years. In 1915 Nicola Romeo took over the company and during war time its focus was on military equipment, however, it wanted to build cars. Soon after the very first Alfa Romeo motor vehicle, the Torpedo 20-30hp, was built.
On February 3, 1918, with World War I slowly drawing to a close, the new company called Alfa Romeo was officially registered.
In the early 1920s Alfa Romeo quickly made a name for itself in motor racing. Drivers like Ugo Sivocci, Antonio Ascari and Enzo Ferrari won several races driving various Alfa Romeo race cars.
Some of the cars produced by Alfa Romeo in the 1920s and 1930s could be purchased as either a road car or a race car.
The Alfa Romeo 6C is one of those cars. Introduced at the 1925 Milan Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 was the first model to carry the 6C name. The nomenclature of the model designation 6C 1500 refers to the engine, where 6C = the number of cylinders, in this case six and 1500 refers to the engine capacity, in this case 1500cc. As was quite common in those days, the bodies were provided by various coach builders such as James Young, Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna, and Pinin Farina.
In 1928 the 6C Sport model was released featuring a double overhead cam six cylinder engine. It quickly made a name for itself winning various races including the 1928 Mille Miglia. The 6C 1500 was superseded by the 6C 1750 in 1929. It was even more successful than its predecessor, winning every major racing event in which it was entered in 1929.
1933 saw the introduction of the 6C 1900 which was superseded by the 6C 2300 in 1934 and the 6C 2500 in 1939. The 6C 2500 was one of the most expensive cars available at the time and was sold to many wealthy customers. A number of coachbuilders used the 6C 2500 as the platform to showcase their cars, but the majority of the cars were built by Touring Superleggera of Milan.
The Alfa Romeo 6C remained in production through until 1954. Its successor, the Alfa Romeo 1900 was first introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1950. The 1900 was an important car for Alfa Romeo. It was the first car they built entirely on a production line and it was also their first unibody production car. The car was offered as a two door and a four door model and was powered by a new 1,884cc 4 cylinder twin cam engine. The car performed well, continuing Alfa Romeos sporting pedigree and it did not take long before people started racing them. The car was successful in various motor sport events like the Targa Floria and Stella Alpina. Alfa Romeo was keen to capitalise on these successes and started using the slogan The family car that wins races to promote sales.
In 1954 Alfa Romeo introduced the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 2+2 at the Turin Motor Show. It was the first of the Tipo 750 and Tipo 101 family. A year later at the same Turin Motor Show they introduced the 4 door saloon and by mid 1955 that was joined by the Giulietta Spider designed by Pinin Farina. All these were powered by a 1.3 litre twin cam four cylinder engine.
In June 1962 Alfa Romeo introduced the Giulia. The Giulia was fitted with a larger 1.6 litre twin cam four cylinder engine. All of the Giulietta sports models, the Sprint, the Sprint Speciale and the Spider were fitted with the new 1.6-litre engine, received a few other minor upgrades and were continued to be sold under the Giulia name until the introduction of the all new Giulia model (Tipo 105) in 1965.
It is understood that Alfa Romeo only built some 400 factory right hand drive Giulia Spiders (Tipo 101.19) between 1963 and 1964.
