Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo.
The BMW Birth Certificate on file confirms this car was delivered new to the Balcom Trading Co. Inc in Tokyo, Japan. This was the local BMW importer which got later absorbed into BMW Japan Corp, the first 100% owned subsidiary of a foreign car maker in Japan. The car has a production date of the 18th October 1974 and a delivery date of the 15th November 1974. The Birth Certificate states the cars original colour was chamonix (BMW white), which is how the car is presented today.
The Japanese history of this car is not known. The car was imported into Australia in the second half of 2007. There is an import approval on file dated 18th of June 2007. It is understood it then resided in New South Wales. There is a photograph of the car on file with the NSW registration BJ82HS. The car was acquired by the previous owner who is a doctor and BMW enthusiast who lived in Adelaide, South Australia.
In October 2018 the car was acquired by its current Melbourne based owner. The car was in a partially disassembled state as the previous owner had commenced pulling the car apart to restore it. This was perfect for the cars new owner who was looking for his next project. His plan was a nut and bolt restoration to a concours standard. He engaged Concourse Automotive Restorations in Geelong to do the body and paint, Auto Sprint Motors in Melbourne for the mechanicals and Unique Auto Interiors in Melbourne to do the trim. The fuel injection system was sent to highly regarded experts Saxon Parts in The Netherlands to be overhauled.
This was to be a no expense spared restoration and where possible NOS parts were sourced for the car. Anything that needed to be replaced or repaired was replaced or repaired. The majority of the new parts were acquired from classic BMW specialists Jaymic in the UK, Rogers tii in the USA and Wallotnesch in Germany.
The restoration was completed just in time for the car to be displayed at Motorclassica in 2019. At that time the odometer read 85,379km.
Since the car was restored, it has been used and enjoyed clocking up some 12,000 km in the last 5 years. The car is a credit to the current owner and all who were involved in the restoration as it still presents today as a fresh restoration.
At some stage the engine block in the car was replaced. There is correspondence on file from BMW in Germany confirming that the engine currently in the car belonged to a BMW 2002 Turbo which was delivered new to France in January 1975. It is unknown when and where the engine was replaced.
Walking up to the car you just cannot help but being impressed with its appearance. The paint is in excellent condition and the decals on the car immediately tell you this car is not your everyday BMW 2002. The flared wheel arches and the decals give the car a very aggressive stance. Even for the uninitiated, it only takes you a few seconds to realise the decals on the front air dam spell Turbo 2002 in reverse. This sends a firm warning to the car driving in front of you when they see you in their rear view mirror . . . please move out of the way!
Walking around the car it is difficult to find any imperfections. There is the smallest of blemishes in the paint on the lower part of the drivers door and there are also some very small marks on the rear spoiler which have been touched up at some stage. All the decals on the car, which are a real feature, are in excellent condition. The stainless steel belt line trim, a unique design feature which runs right around the car, is in very good condition with only a few very small imperfections. The rest of the external trim, including the badges, lights and lenses is in excellent condition. The Hella headlights are the correct type and taillight lenses have the correct BMW markings on them.
The car is fitted with the correct 13 inch Mahle wheels, shod with Pirelli Cinturato tyres, size 185/70/13, which are date stamped 5118 (week 51, 2018).
Open the door and the first thing you will notice is the red instrument binnacle. This is another unique design feature that tells you this is not an ordinary BMW 2002. The interior itself is immaculate. The seats, door cards, dash, centre console and even the carpets present like new. The seats are firm and comfortable and provide ample support. When the current owner decided to restore the car he also decided to make it a more usable classic for the Australian climate and discretely install a modern electric air conditioning system. The air is fed to the cabin using period correct vents. The car is also fitted with EZ power steering.
Getting behind the wheel is easy and it does not take long to find that comfortable driving position. As you would expect from a BMW the interior is very business like and everything is exactly where you would expect it to be. The Turbo version of the 2002 also had an extra instrument binnacle with two gauges above the centre console. One gauge showing the turbo boost and the other one a clock. On this car the clock has been replace with a voltage meter.
We were very eager to find out if this car lives up to its reputation. The car starts easily and quickly settles into a smooth idle. With great anticipation we wait for the engine to warm up before taking the car out on the road for a short test drive. First impressions are good. The car feels solid, yet very nimble on the road. There are no rattles or squeaks and the car is easy to drive. This BMW 2002 Turbo is equipped with the more desirable 5 speed dog leg gearbox which works well with that typical German precision. Out on the road you quickly forget you are driving a 50 year old car. This car is just a lot of fun to drive and when pushed it is somewhat of a pocket rocket. The 4 cylinder engine is only a 1,990cc but with the KKK (Kuhnle, Kopp and Kausch) turbocharger it pushed out an impressive 170 bhp. Top speed was quoted as 210 km/hr (130 mph) and the car could dash from 0 100 km/h (60 mph) in around 7 seconds. There is just something about hearing that turbo spinning up every time you getclose to 4,000rpm.
A BMW 2002 Turbo is a very unique and rare car anywhere in the world with only 1,672 having been produced. They were never sold new in Australia and only a handful have found their way to our shores. They tend to be tightly held and a result the opportunity to purchase this care presents a unique opportunity.

Background:
On 7 March 1916 the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) was established. The company was the result of a reorganisation of the Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenfabrik, a company founded by Gustav Otto in Bavaria, Germany, in 1910. The company was one of the aircraft pioneers in the early 20th century. A year later, in 1917, a Bavarian aircraft engine manufacturer by the name of Rapp Motorwerke changed its name into Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH (BMW). That company transferred all its engine production assets to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in 1922 and that company was then renamed to Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW).
The company survived World War I and started focussing on the production of motorcycle engines, farm equipment, household items and railway brakes. In 1923 BMW produced its first motorcycle, the BMW R23.
In 1928 BMW purchased the Fahrzeug Fabrik Eisenach which built Austin Sevens under license. That is when BMW officially became an automobile manufacturer. The first car BMW sold under its own name was the BMW 3/15 which was basically a rebadged Austin 7. Throughout the 1930s BMW focussed more and more on producing their own cars and expanded its range into sports cars and larger luxury cars.
During World War II the BMW factories were heavily bombed and severely damaged. Motor vehicle production was curtained and BMW has concentrated on building aircraft engines during the War. As a result, after the war the company was prohibited from producing aircraft or motor vehicles. Miraculously the company survived by making pots, pans and bicycles. It began manufacturing motorcycles again in 1948 and cars in 1952.
Its first post war effort was the BMW 501 which was built in a new factory in Munich. The car was reasonably successful and it effectively relaunched BMW. At the time BMW was also building its fabulous little Isetta, but the company was doing it tough financially. In 1955 the BMW 507 made its debut at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. The 507 was roadster powered by a 3.2 litre V8 engine and was meant to revive the companies sporting image. Instead, the high production cost led the company to the verge of bankruptcy. Only 252 examples were built before production ceased in 1959. As it turns out, it would take BMW nearly 30 years before it would produce another roadster. The company was in serious financial trouble in 1959 and only a large investment from a third party saved the company and prevented a takeover by Daimler-Benz.
It was the launch of the BMW New Class cars in 1962 that proved to be a game changer for the company. Initially these were 4-door compact sedans aimed at the executives. The first one was the BMW 1500 which was first introduced at the September 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show. Other models like the BMW 1800, the successor of the 1500 the BMW 1600 and the BMW 2000 followed soon. In 1965 BMW introduced a coupe versions of the 2000, the 2000C and he 2000CS.
Around the mid 1960s BMW recognised there was a market for a slightly smaller version of their New Class cars. Around the same time they stopped producing the BMW 1600 they introduced the BMW 1600-2 which was a shorter two door model. In 1968 BMW started producing the two door BMW 2002 with its stronger 1,990cc M10 engine.
In 1973 BMW introduced its first turbo charged production car at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW 2002 Turbo. It produced 170hp and had a top speed of 211 km/h. It was only available in two colours Chamonix (white) and Polaris (silver) and all cars featured BMW motorsport colour scheme stripes and decals on the sides as well as the front air dam. Interestingly the car was introduced just before the 1973 oil crises and as BMW themselves said; BMW had built a car that contradicted the spirit of the times like no automobile before.
Only 1,672 were ever built between July 1973 and June 1975, including twelve pre-production cars constructed between July and December of 1973. The BMW 2002 Turbo was only built as left hand drive.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a 1938 MG VA Tickford Drophead Coupe by Salmons & Sons, affectionately known as Vera.
This car is understood to have been manufactured in August 1938 and was delivered to its first owner in the UK shortly thereafter. There is a copy of a document titled: MG VA Cars 1937 1939 . . . The Survivors on file, which is dated 22nd February 1989. This notes the following information on this car: Year 1938, Registration MPL268 and Owner: White, AJC. Its subsequent early history is not known.
At some stage the car then fell into disrepair and it probably lay dormant for many years. It was purchased in poor condition, most likely in the late 1980s, which is when its restoration started. A decision was made to build a new body in aluminium, with only the original steel guards, running boards and bonnets retained. The Pre-War MG Register of Australia notes that the body was understood to have been built by Rod Jolly, who is highly regarded for his work restoring Rolls-Royce and Bentleys. Progress was slow and the cars then owner apparently ran out of money. The car was sold to MG S, V and W specialists, SVW Spares, in the UK. Shortly after this, in early 2007 the car was purchased by Robin & Jenny Page from Melbourne in Victoria. The project was at a point where the Pages were able to choose the paint and upholstery colours for the car. They made the decision to paint the car in two tone grey, fit a black soft top and trim the interior in maroon. This is a beautiful colour combinationgiving this VA a very elegant appearance.
In February 2008, Vera as this car was christened by the Pages, arrived into Melbourne. The name Vera was chosen by the Pages from the model designation of VA and the memory of English singer and entertainer Vera Lynn.
In March the car was taken to the 2008 MG Nationals which were held in Tamworth, where it won Class A: Pre-War Touring with an impressive score of 569 points.
Unfortunately not all was well with the little VA as in October of that year the car suffered a major engine failure, necessitating a total rebuild. During the rebuild the capacity was increased from 1,548cc to 1,657cc and the compression ratio increased to 8.6:1. At the same time the gearbox was also rebuilt and other mechanical work completed.
Over the years the Pages kept on improving their beloved MG VA Tickford Drophead Coupe. All that hard work paid off when in October 2012 the car was selected into Motorclassica, which was Australias premier Concours dElegance and classic car show. The car was very well received and it won the Pre-War (British and European) 1930-1939 class. That same year the car also won the Pre-War Touring & Saloons class at the MG National meet in Hobart. There it also won outright in the pre-MGA class.

After 12 enjoyable years of ownership and many great memories, the Pages decided to sell Vera. The car was sold to the current owners in January 2016. Like the Pages, they have thoroughly enjoyed their journey of ownership with this fabulous car. Unfortunately, they are selling due to ill health.
Today this 1938 MG VA Tickford Drophead Coupe still presents and drives beautifully.
The two tone grey paint work contrasts perfectly with burgundy upholstery and it is the perfect colour choice for the car. The paint work is now almost 20 years old, however, it is still in excellent condition. There are a few minor blemishes and defects, most noticeably two hairline cracks on the swage line on the left hand bonnet and a small star on the right. The panels gaps are all very good.
The interior presents beautifully. The timber dashboard houses the most elegant cluster of instruments that are in excellent condition. The upholstery is all in excellent condition with no rips, tears or obvious wear. Even the carpets are in excellent condition!
Under the bonnet everything presents beautifully. You will note the wheel hammer and original crank clipped on the bulkhead. There is what looks to be a complete tool kit in the boot.
The painted wire wheels are in excellent condition. All the wheels, including the spare, are shod with Blockley tyres, size 5.00 19. The tyres are still in good condition.
We were able to take the car for a test drive following our photo shoot. Like most MGs of that era it required a choke to start from cold. The engine fired pretty much at the first pull of the starter and it immediately settled into a smooth idle. Once it had warmed up we went for a short drive and I can confirm the car is tight on the road and it drove every bit as good as it looks.
The current owners wanted the car to be reliable and essentially be able to jump in and drive it to wherever they wanted. There is no doubt that they achieved that objective as the car was driven from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast which is where it is currently stored.
The Tickford three position folding roof is a work of art and it is in a very good condition. When we photographed the car the roof was not folded down correctly. We have since discovered the correct way to fold the roof down and it does so in a very neat and tidy way.
This car is fitted with a factory replacement engine as noted on the engine ID plate, which we understand was installed many years ago. MG aficionados will note the replacement engine is burgundy in colour, as they were, whereas the original engines were painted green.
Accompanying the car is a toolkit, a crank handle, a history file with receipts and photographs of the restoration, a detailed list with some receipts showing all the work completed to the car since it was acquired by the previous owners as well as various books and MG literature.

Background:
MG is one of the worlds most iconic motoring brands.
In 1912, with the support of the Earl of Macclesfield, William Morris founded W.R.M. Motors Ltd and started the manufacturing of Morris designed cars. In 1919 W.R.M. Motors was liquidated and essentially replaced by Morris Motors.
In 1921 Morris hired Cecil Kimber as a Sales Manager for Morris Garages and in 1923 he became the General Manager. Kimber had a vision and started building sportier versions of Morris cars and labelled them MG. On the 1st May 1924 Morris Garages registered the MG Octagon as a trademark.
Demand grew, which necessitated a move to a larger premises in September 1925. This was quickly followed by another move in 1927. By 1928 the business had grown so much a decision was made to separate it from Morris and the M.G. Car Company was established in March 1928. In 1929 the company moved to Abingdon and on the 21st July 1930 the M.G. Car Company Limited was incorporated.
The first cars to be produced under the name MG in 1924 were special bodied Morris Cowleys. The first MG to specifically compete in sporting events is a car now known as Old Number One. It was produced in 1925 and was first seen at the 1925 Lands End Trial. Other MG models followed quickly but in 1928 at the Motor Show at Olympia MG introduced the MG M-Type Midget, which became the first of many sports cars produced by MG and was a big success for the company.
In that same year MG also introduced the MG 18/80. This was the first MG with a chassis designed and built by MG. The 18/80 was equipped with a six cylinder engine with a capacity of 2,468cc.
A milestone for the company occurred in 1933 when an MG Magnette K3 became the first non-Italian car to win its class at the Mile Miglia.
William Morris owned MG personally and in 1935 he sold it to Morris Motors.
In the late 1930s MG produced a series of sports saloons, the VA, the SA and the WA.
The VA, originally marketed as the MG 1½ litre was the smallest of the three and was available as a 4 door sports saloon and as a 4 seater open tourer and as a drophead coupe. The sports saloon and the open tourer were both built inhouse but the body for the drophead coupe was manufactured by Salmons and Sons of Newport Pagnell, UK.
MG also made a special version of the VA, powered by a 1,707cc engine for police use.
In total 2,407 MG VAs were built between 1937 and 1939. The breakdown of body types is: 1,238 saloons, 591 open tourers and 564 drophead coupes, 2 chassis and 12 unknown.
In 1952 Morris Motors Ltd and the Austin Motor Company Limited merged and became The British Motor Company Ltd, BMC.

1938 MG VA Tickford Drophead Coupe

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 Grosser.
There is a copy of the Mercedes-Benz data card on file which confirms this to be an Australian delivered, factory right hand drive example. It was originally finished in dunkelrot (dark red), colour code 542G with white grey upholstery and cream carpets (trim code 221). The car has a number of options, including air conditioning (option code 306).
Interestingly, the cars data plate notes option code 901, which is for a flagpole right, so perhaps this was either an embassy or government owned car.
The cars history file dates back to the early 1980s and at that time the car was owned by a Mr Ian Haggerty from Sydney, NSW. It is understood that Haggerty was a long term owner of this Mercedes-Benz 600 and the documentation on file suggests he sold the car in June 1990.
The car was acquired by a classic car enthusiast from Noosa on Queenslands Sunshine Coast, most likely in the late 1990s. He wanted to restore the car and in 2001 engaged the services of Sleeping Beauties in Brisbane, one of Australias leading high end restoration shops. Sleeping Beauties are classic Mercedes-Benz specialists and they have restored cars that have been exhibited at the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance.
The journey was a slow one and over the next five years the car was cosmetically restored and the interior was refreshed. In conjunction with Sleeping Beauties the owner chose to have car repainted in Mercedes-Benz light ivory (a very light yellow) and retrimmed in light olive green.
The major mechanical components were checked and deemed to be in very good order, hence, not rebuilt. Three Point Classic in Mount Gravatt were engaged to overhaul the air suspension, hydraulics and other mechanical ancillaries.
The work was completed in 2015 and the end result was simply stunning. The colour combination is unique and a refreshing change from the more common palette of black, white and silver often seen on these Mercedes-Benz grand limousines! The car was shown at the Mercedes-Benz Club of Queenslands 2015 Concours dElegance where it was very well received, winning its class.
In 2016 the cars owner relocated overseas and made the difficult decision to sell his car collection, including this Mercedes-Benz. In August of that year it was sold to a prominent Brisbane based motor trade executive and classic car collector. At that time the odometer read 76,544 miles. He used the car sparingly but as with all his cars decided to go on a journey to take an exceptional motor car to the next level. Additional mechanical work was undertaken by Three Point Classic along with other adoc jobs by his own private mechanic/restoration specialist.
In August 2022 the car was sold to the current owner who lives in country Victoria and at that time the odometer read c77,000 miles. He is another classic car tragic who has a significant collection of cars. He is a fussy owner who regularly services his cars and if something needs to be done, he gets it done. Throughout his ownership the car has been maintained by the highly respected Auto Projects in Ballarat, Victoria. They recently completed a complete overhaul of the braking system.
The current owner has enjoyed his time with this Mercedes-Benz 600 Grosser, travelling over 3,000 miles in his three years of ownership. He is taking his collection in a different direction and as a result this car is now offered for sale.
At the time of photographing the car the odometer read 80,286 miles.
Whilst the car carries what is considered an older restoration, it still presents exceptionally well. The light ivory paintwork presents beautifully, complemented nicely by all the chrome trim which is in excellent condition. Defects are hard to find. The balance of the external trim, including the lights and lenses as well as the glass is all in equally as good condition. The panel gaps are excellent and the doors shut with that 'thud' exactly as they would have back in 1966!
Inside the cabin it is all luxury. Whilst the exterior of this car is stunning, we think the interior is even better! The olive green upholstery is just stunning! Everything presents essentially like new. It is most likely that no one has even sat in the rear seats since the car was restored. The upholstery, the headlining and even the carpets are all beautifully presented. The timber is generally in excellent condition, though there are some hairline cracks in the lacquer on the timber dash.
At the time of our test drive all of the instruments and controls looked to be in working order. The air conditioning has recently been upgraded with a modern system and it blows ice cold air. The main control switch for the air conditioning, along with the fan control for the demister and the heater tap is discreetly hidden under the dash to the right of the steering column.
The cockpit is aeroplane like with all of its switches and buttons that operate the various accessories such as the windows, front and rear seats, the suspension and more. Even the cowl vent is hydraulically operated by a switch on the dashboard. All of these items are hydraulic and operate rapidly and silently in a way that is impressive even today.
Under the massive bonnet the engine bay presents well and everything is neat, clean and tidy.
The boot is also clean and tidy. The hard plastic lining looks to be original and it is in good condition with no cracks evident. The hydraulic service kit is still present in its original case and the spare wheel lives in its own compartment. We should mention that there is an issue with the hydraulic control valve for the boot, which is not currently operating correctly.
Unfortunately, many of our test drives are over too quickly! However, on this occasion we had this car out and about for well over an hour and as a result were able to get a really good feel for how it performed.
The car was ready for us when we arrived so the engine was warm. At the turn of the key the stonking V8 cranks over and soon fires, catching on all cylinders. As you would expect, the engine is incredibly smooth. It is also incredibly quiet. With a wheel base of 3.2 metres and an overall length of 5.54 metres make no mistake this is a big car. Interestingly the length kind of disappears once you are behind the wheel but seated in the back its hard not to be somewhat overawed by the size of the car. This fabulous Mercedes-Benz just goes about its business in a very efficient and considered manner. The ride is quite unbelievable for a fifty year old car . . . it just glides along the road without any fuss. You push the accelerator and the car proceeds effortlessly, you turn the steering wheel and the car just follows in the direction you want it to go, you apply the brakes and the car slows or rather decelerates effortlessly again . . . the whole experience is just so incredibly refined. Even thoughit weighs in around two and half tonnes, the big Benz pulls hard when needed. Mercedes-Benz quoted a top speed of near 130 mph (210 km/hr) and a 0-60 mph (100 km/hr) sprint of under 10 seconds!
This Mercedes-Benz 600 Grosser is truly outstanding and its presentation today is a testament to the build quality of the car as well as the quality of the restoration work completed.
Often referred to as the Grand Mercedes or the Grosser, which is German for the big one - the 600 continues to set the benchmark for luxury vehicles to this day. From its powerful V8 engine to its groundbreaking hydraulic system and lavish interior, the 600 is a symbol of power, prestige, and technological prowess. Finding one in this condition is rare.

Background
Following the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Europes car industry was decimated. In Germany both Daimler and Benz went back to producing cars post-war, however, times were tough. A merger between Daimler and Benz would ensure that both companies survived and following a technical co-operation agreement in 1924, the companies formally merged on the 1st July 1926. Mercedes-Benz was born!
Subsequently, Mercedes-Benz went on to build some of the greatest cars of all time. The cars from Stuttgart bearing the three-pointed star all had one thing in common . . . they were renowned for their technical innovation, build quality, luxury and performance.
In 1951 Mercedes-Benz introduced the Type W187 220 series cars, which was the first model to be powered by a six cylinder engine post World War II. This model was a great success and built in relatively big numbers. It was succeeded by the Type W180 series cars in 1954, which like its predecessor was available as a sedan, coupe and convertible.
In the 1950s Mercedes-Benz produced one of the greatest cars of all time the iconic 300SL Gullwing and 300SL Roadster. Whilst fabulous sporting cars, they were very expensive and generally sold to the rich and famous. The Type W186 and Type W189 300 series four door luxury tourers were built alongside the Type W198 300SL Gullwing and Roadster and they were indeed fabulous cars in their own right, though still very expensive.
In the early 1960s Mercedes-Benz also wanted to go back to their roots of the 1930s and build the worlds best saloon car.
First introduced back in 1963 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Grosser or Grand Mercedes was a luxury car with few peers at that time. The new Type W100 set about re-establishing Mercedes-Benz as the maker of the finest automobiles in the world. The car was powered by a thumping 6.3 litre V8 engine delivering 250bhp that was capable of taking a car that weighed in excess of 2.5 tonne to well over 200 km/hr.
The car was an engineering marvel and its air suspension gave the car a ride that was smooth on just about every surface. The car also featured a very complex hydraulic system that powered the windows, seats, the sun roof and even an automatic close on the boot lid.
The car was produced in two main models being the 600 Grosser (short wheel base) and 600 Pullman (long wheel base). Interestingly the short wheel base cars were intended to by driven by the owners whereas the long wheel base cars were intended to be driven by chauffers.
Incredibly the Mercedes-Benz 600 series was in production for almost twenty years from 1963 through until 1981 during which time 2,677 cars were built. The breakdown of cars is:

These cars were very popular with royalty, world leaders, celebrities, movie stars, rock stars as well as the rich and famous. Today these cars, and particularly the Pullman, are highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors alike.
To quote Mercedes-Benz . . . in the illustrious history of automobiles, few vehicles have left their mark like the 1963 Mercedes-Benz 600. Designed by revolutionary French designer Paul Bracq and launched at the International Motor Show in Germany, the 600 transcended the boundaries of luxury.
Often referred to as the Grand Mercedes or the Grosser, which is German for the big one the 600 continues to set the benchmark for luxury vehicles to this day. From its powerful V8 engine to its groundbreaking hydraulic system and lavish interior, the 600 is a symbol of power, prestige, and technological prowess.
At the heart of the Mercedes-Benz 600 beats a powerhouse the formidable and iconic M 100 6.3-litre V8 engine (the first in a Mercedes-Benz passenger car) that set a new standard for performance in the luxury segment. The M 100 V8 became legendary, eventually forming the foundations of Mercedes-AMG but thats another story.
The true marvel of the 600 extended beyond its engine to an innovative hydraulic system that powered various aspects of the vehicle, redefining automotive engineering. Personalisation options abounded, with a selection of wood trims, premium leather upholstery and a spectrum of interior colours. The rear compartment, a sanctuary for passengers, could also be equipped with a privacy divider an option that heightened the exclusive feel of this already prestigious vehicle.
Many were drawn to the unmatched luxury and performance of the 600 including iconic figures such as John Lennon and Elvis Presley making it not just a symbol of status, but a cultural icon.

1966 MERCEDES-BENZ 600 Grosser

A new arrival at Oldtimer Australia is this freshly restored, Australian delivered, 1950 Land Rover Series 1 80.
There is a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate on file which confirms that this particular example was despatched from the factory on 23rd May 1950. Its destination was Annand & Thompson Pty Limited in Brisbane, Australia. The certificate also confirms this car was delivered with a 1.6 litre petrol engine.
The early history of this lights through the grill Land Rover is not known however, it found its way into the ownership of a family who lived on a property near Gladstone in Central Queensland. It is understood that the car sat in shed on the property next to a World War II bomber for at least 30 years! It was ultimately sold as part of an estate sale from which it was acquired by the current owner and noted Land Rover restorer Guy Bedington from GB Restorations in Toowoomba.
When the car was recovered a few years ago, it was found to be essentially complete and in remarkably good condition, with virtually no rust. This was as a result of it being very well stored in a dry environment.
Affectionately known as Matilda, the car has undergone a 650 hour fully detailed restoration by GB Restorations using almost entirely original parts. The engine, gearbox and axles are original equipment to the car with all correct numbers, as is the carburettor, distributor and other components.
Every component has been stripped and meticulously overhauled using original parts where possible or new old stock components. All body bolts and screws were sourced from a Birmingham UK company specialising in BSF products with the correct sherardised plating.
The car presents in the original specification Land Rover deep bronze green with correct green vinyl trimmed seats. To make it more comfortable for the people sitting in the back seat cushions were fitted using the same green vinyl. For the purists, these can be easily removed as they are not attached. The same for the rubber mat in the back, its only there to protect the paint on the floor.
The canvas hood presents in the correct khaki colour and it has the correct door top flaps.
The windscreen is two separate panes of glass. The left hand pane is most likely original as it retains the original Triplex XXX Toughened etching. Even though it is scratched, the decision was made to retain it. The right hand pane is new glass.
The devil is in the detail and the car presents with correct Lucas original headlights and Lucas wiper motor.
The car rides on 16 body coloured steel wheels that are fitted with Speedways Military tyres, size 6.00-16. A correct load space spare wheel is currently mounted in the tray, however, it can also be mounted on the bonnet.
GB Restorations usually build cars to order, however, a change in circumstance of the buyer of this car, has resulted in it being available for sale.
The restoration of this Land Rover has only just been completed and as a result everything presents as new. Today the odometer reads 16 miles, which is the distance travelled since the car was restored.
There are photos on file which show the extent of the restoration. The car was stripped down to a bare chassis and every component, including the drive train has been rebuilt.
Land Rovers were originally built for agricultural and industrial work. They were practical, no frills vehicles designed purely for function - not comfort - and as a result, they are very basic. The driving position is upright, the seats are simple, there are no carpets and the dashboard is minimalistic, featuring only the essential instruments needed to operate the vehicle.
Under the bonnet everything is clean and tidy as one would expect from a recently restored car. The car retains its original ID plate, which matches the stamped chassis number, as well as its Annand & Thompson dealer plate. The radiator has the date stamp 1149 (November 1949), which would be correct for this car.
All you have to do to start the car from cold is to turn the ignition on, pull the choke out and press the starter button located on the fire wall. The car starts easily and the 1.6 litre (1,595cc) petrol engine will fire up at pretty much first crank. You can then almost immediately push the choke back and use the accelerator to further warm up the engine. After about 10 seconds the engine will idle smoothly.
The instruments and switches are all original and have been fully restored. On our test drive all the instruments were working as they should.
As one would expect from a car that wasnt built for comfort the controls are very basic and need a firm hand. The gearbox is precise and tight, but you do need to be deliberate when changing gears. With its top speed of around 50-60mph (if you are brave enough!) the Land Rover is not the fastest car on the road. The steering is also relatively vague by modern standards. Theres noticeable play in the wheel, so you often need to make small corrections to keep the vehicle tracking straight, particularly on the open road. But that is not what this car is all about. On the road it is best described as slow but capable, but it is off-road is where it really shines. It was built to handle mud, hills, and rough terrain with ease!
We were keen to put the cars off road capability to the test, but decided that discretion was the better part of valour!
The brakes are quite adequate for the car and will pull the car up quickly and in a straight line when needed.
In summary, these early Land Rovers are full of character and incredibly engaging to drive.
These early Land Rovers are becoming thin on the ground and the opportunity to acquire a brand new 1950 Land Rover Series 1 80 that has been correctly and freshly restored presents a unique opportunity.

Background
One of the fundamental principles of economics is the law of supply and demand. During World War II the US army had a need for a light 4WD vehicle capable of carrying troops as well as cargo. And so the Jeep was born. From 1941 through until 1945 Willys and Ford were the major supplier of Jeeps, in various configurations, to the US military and their allies.
The history of the Rover Company dates back to the mid-1800s when it was selling sewing machines and then 'safety' tricycles and bicycles. By the 1930s, it had evolved into a car company but was hit badly by the Great Depression. In common with many British industrial companies during World War II, its factories were turned over to the war effort and produced engines for tanks and aircraft. By 1945 and the end of World War II, Rover found itself with two excellent factories and a highly skilled workforce. It was looking at restarting car production and had ambitious plans to build 20,000 cars per year. A new model, the M'-Type was dropped when it became clear that it would be unsuitable for export and that tooling costs would be excessive. Plans to produce 15,000 of the pre-war designs per year were quickly quashed by the Government which refused to allocate steel for more than 1,100 cars per year. This serious shortfall led Rover to realise that a stopgap solution was required until sufficientsteel was available. The stopgap also had to have export potential. Just to make things difficult, Rover had never exported any vehicles before!
Maurice Wilks, Rovers head of design, had been using ex-army Jeeps on his farm and realising that there was no real alternative decided that Rover would provide one. The first prototype Land Rover, developed in late 1946, was actually built on Jeep chassis. The bodywork was made of an aluminium alloy called Birmabright.
Using similar dimensions to the World War II Jeep, the first Land Rovers had an 80" wheelbase. The new Land Rover was first unveiled at the Amsterdam Motor Show on the 30th April 1948. It featured a steel box section chassis with an aluminium body and was powered by a 1.6 litre, 4-cylinder Rover engine from the P3 Rover car range developing around 50 hp. The gearbox was four speed Rover mated to a two-speed transfer box thus allowing 4WD operation. A PTO (power take off) was also fitted to enable the Land Rover to be used as a stationary power unit.
Rover didnt know what to expect but they need not have worried. The Land Rover was an outstanding success and the order books quickly overflowed. A legend was born! This humble Land Rover is in many ways the pioneer of the ubiquitous SUVs seen on our roads today.

1950 LAND ROVER SERIES 1

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this lovely restored Alvis Speed 20 SC Sports Saloon by Charlesworth.
In total Alvis built 1,165 Speed 20s from 1932 to 1936. This includes 289 Speed 20 SCs, of which 165 cars were bodied by Charlesworth and 131 of them were sports saloons.
According to documentation on file from the Alvis Speed 20 SC Register, this particular car was originally bodied by Charlesworth and dispatched from Alvis factory on the 13th January 1935.
This car retains its Alvis ID plate, Charlesworth body number plate and retains all its original and correct factory stampings for chassis and engine numbers. The above mentioned documentation confirms that this cars chassis, car, body and engine numbers all match.
This cars history is not documented, however, it is recorded in the Alvis Car Club of Victoria Newsletter from January 1992 as attending an Alvis Day in NSW on the 9th November 1991. At that time the car was dark green in colour and it was owned by Gary Coxon.
It was then understood to have been owned by a south east Queensland based Alvis enthusiast who was an aviation engineer. He restored the car himself over a long period of time. There are photos on file of the car from 2008 and 2009 and at that time it was light green in colour. The photos from 2009 were taken at the David Hack Classic held in Toowoomba.
The current owner acquired this car at Shannons Autumn Classic 2015, held in Sydney on the 2nd March, 2015. At the time Shannons noted that the car had a substantial Australian history.
A short time after purchasing this Alvis, the owner quickly realised it was not at the level he wanted it to be and he decided to go on a journey to completely restore the car.
For the mechanicals he engaged the services of Alvis specialists Red Triangle in the UK. The engine and gearbox were packaged up and sent to the UK to be fully rebuilt. The body, paint and assembly were completed by Dion Willcox at The Kustom Shop in Brisbane and the interior was retrimmed by Lee Brothers in Brisbane.
The restoration was essentially an open cheque book and a significant amount of money has been spent. There are invoices on file from Red Triangle for in excess of £50,000.
The car has been subject to some sympathetic upgrades during the restoration, including the fitment of an electric water pump and electronic ignition.
The restoration was completed some years ago and the car has been kept in static storage ever since. As a result, the current owner has decided the car should to an enthusiast who will hopefully use this fabulous motor car. Prior to coming to us to sell the car was recommissioned and checked over.
This car has an incredible presence. The owner decided on the most stunning and very Alvis bold colour scheme of black with a red sash. You will note from the photos the black front wheels and the red rear wheels, which essentially are a continuation of the sash. The colour scheme looks great and coupled with the low waist line it also creates a visually sleek and very sporting profile. The overall look is further emphasised by the imposing Lucas headlights and mesh radiator grill.
Whilst the car now carries an older repaint, the paint work still presents well having a strong depth of colour and a nice gloss finish. We only noticed some very minor defects. The most noticeable defect is where the paint has peeled off in certain areas on the bonnet hinge. The majority of the external trim is all chrome and it is excellent condition. The same can be said for all the glass, which is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks evident. Unfortunately, the front Alvis badge has two chips of red colour missing.
Open the door and you are welcomed by a very good looking interior. You can immediately tell this car has not been used since its restoration. Everything looks new, most notably the red upholstery, carpets and head lining. The timber has been refurbished and along with the black dash full of typically British Smiths instruments, it provides a nice contrast with the red upholstery.
The engine bay is neat, clean and tidy but its presentation is probably not quite at the level of the rest of the car. The boot is very small but presents well.
The wire wheels are in excellent condition and are shod with Excelsior tyres, size 525/550 -19. They are date stamped 1715 (week 17, 2015).
Getting into the car can be a bit of a challenge with the hand brake being positioned on the right side of the drivers seat but you quickly get used to that. The driving position is quite upright which actually helps with the visibility. The view out over the long bonnet is very impressive!
Once we have familiarised ourselves with the car and got comfortable behind the steering wheel, it is time for a short test drive. Starting the car is easy, even from cold. Firstly, there is a battery isolator hidden under the dash. You then turn the ignition switch on and you will hear the electric water pump start up. For a cold start you will need the choke, which you pull out . . . then it is simply a push on the starter button. The 2.8 liter inline six cylinder engine fires immediately and sounds good. We let the car warm up for a little bit, then turn the choke off.
The Alvis Speed 20 was a modern, advanced and very sophisticated car in its day and from the Speed 20 SB model used a constant mesh gear box. This model was also the first British car with independent front wheel springing and steering. And with 95hp available the car was quoted as having a top speed approaching 160 km/hr or 100 mph in the old money.
We were keen to see how this all stacked up out on the open road. First impressions were positive. The car feels tight on the road and there is ample power available to ensure you are able to keep up with modern traffic. For a mid 1930s car the gear changes are very good and they are smooth both up and down the box. The steering feels precise. The car still has mechanical brakes and whilst they do pull the car up nicely and in a straight line, they do take some getting used to. All in all the car performed very well.
There is no doubt this Alvis Speed 20 is a car that the more you drive and get accustomed to the better it will get.
Accompanying the car is a good history file, which contains a huge amount of documentation from the restoration as well as an owners handbook (copy) and a spare parts catalogue.
In period Alvis advertised their cars as The Silent Speed 20 and . . . now with all silent performance setting a new fashion is sports car design. The Alvis Car & Engineering Company Limited was certainly a competitor for Britains best, being Rolls-Royce and Bentley, companies that have always been synonymous with engineering excellence.
The Alvis Speed 20 was one of the most respected and successful pre war cars. The later Type SC and SD models with the smooth constant mesh gear box and more powerful 2,762cc litre straight six engine are the best of the breed. We think these sporting pre war grand tourers present great value in todays market.

Background:
In 1919 naval architect TG John took over a small Coventry based carburettor manufacturer named Holly Bros and founded the company TG John and Co Ltd. The company initially focused on making stationary engines, carburettors and motor scooters. Shortly after founding the company, John was approached by Geoffrey de Freville who was looking for a company that could manufacture and potentially use his advanced designs for a 4-cylinder engine with aluminium pistons and pressure lubrication.
Many people think de Freville was ultimately responsible for the name Alvis, something he himself has always denied.
In 1920 the first Alvis was introduced to the world, the Alvis 10/30. The car was available with a range of different body styles and was powered by a 4 cylinder engine designed by de Freville with a capacity of 1,460cc. The car was an instant success and it gained a reputation for quality workmanship and performance, something for which Alvis became famous. The Alvis 10/30 remained in production until 1923 and in total 770 were made. The Alvis 10/30 was succeeded by the Alvis 11/40, the Alvis 12/40, the Alvis 12/50 and the Alvis 12/60.
On the 14th of December 1921 the company name was officially changed to The Alvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd.
Like many car manufacturers in those days, Alvis wanted to go motor racing. Their greatest achievement came in 1928 when their team finished 1st and 2nd in class at Le Mans and a highly creditable 6th and 9th overall. The car was powered by a 1.5-litre 4 cylinder supercharged engine with a single overhead camshaft. Interestingly, it was front wheel drive. Building on their success in racing, Alvis decided to offer a production Super-Sports front wheel drive for the experienced driver. The Alvis 12/75 was an instant success and achieved high acclaim in the press. Unfortunately, the cost of producing such an advanced vehicle was high and with the great depression looming Alvis decided to stop the production in favour of more profitable models. In the end, only 143 were produced.
In 1927 Alvis introduced their first 6 cylinder model, the Alvis 14.75. The engine in the 14.75 became the basis for a long line of luxury 6 cylinder cars. The 14.75 was succeeded by the 16.95 in 1928 which was renamed Silver Eagle in 1929. In those days Alvis didnt produce their own coachwork, instead they relied on the many available coachbuilders in the Midlands area. Companies like Car bodies, Charlesworth Bodies, Cross & Ellis, Duncan Industries, E. Bertelli Ltd, Grose, Gurney Nutting, Hooper, Lancefield Coachworks, Martin Walter, Mayfair Carriage Co, Mulliners, Tickford, Vanden Plas, Weymann Fabric Bodies, and Arnold of Manchester.
In 1931 Alvis introduced the Speed 20. It featured a heavily modified version of the 6 cylinder engine featured in the earlier Silver Eagle. By now it had increased to 2,511cc. In October 1933 Alvis introduced the Speed 20 SB which featured a new, all-silent gearbox that featured a synchromesh on the bottom gear, a worlds first. This model was also the first British car with independent front wheel springing and steering. The car also had a built-in jacking system. In 1935, with the third iteration of the Speed 20, the SC, the engine size increased to 2762cc. Later that year Alvis introduced another iteration of their 6 cylinder engine, the 3 ½ Litre. Initially, the car was named 3 ½ Litre SA, but in 1936 it was renamed Speed 25.
In total 1,164 Speed 20s were produced, 289 were SC versions, 165 of them were body by Charlesworth and 131 of them were saloons.

1935 ALVIS SPEED 20 SC

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this absolutely stunning, magnificently restored Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupe.
This car is well known to Oldtimer Australia, having been sold by us to its current owner back in August 2015.
This is a UK delivered factory right hand drive example that was sold through Brooklands to Messrs Carr & Co Ltd of Shirley, Birmingham in the UK. The car was delivered new on the 25th March 1955. It was finished in blue haze with a blue leather interior. The soft top was grey plastic with a fawn headliner.
Incredibly, the previous owner of the car was distantly related to its first owner Mr Neville Carr (his wifes great uncle) and according to history he was the black sheep of the family. Having a reputation as somewhat of a rogue and playboy he is understood to have used the car as it was intended . . . and that was to drive it, hard! Mr Carr was an amateur racing driver and living family members recall him driving the car in numerous sprint and hill climb events, including Prescott. The car travelled circa 30,000 miles in its first five years of ownership! Carr owned the car until circa 1960.
According to the factory documentation, a replacement rear axle was fitted on the 25th May 1955 (@ 4,181 miles) and a replacement engine was fitted on the 21st August 1959 (@ 27,608 miles). This work was undertaken by Aston Martin. The mileage is noted as 38,772 on 19th June 1960 when the car was serviced by Aston Martin.
The factory documentation also notes subsequent owners as a Mr D Conyers Esq of 18 Egerton Garden Mews SW3 (London) and in 1982 RL MacKenzie from Houghton in South Africa.
Jaguar works racing driver Peter Sutcliffe spent significant time in South Africa whilst motor racing in the early 1960s and it is understood that he acquired the car in the UK and shipped it to South Africa to use when he was there. It is probable that he bought the car off Conyers.
According to a hand written letter on the file the car was subsequently acquired by an Attorney who lived in Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. In 1977 the car was discovered in Elandsfontein (Johannesburg) by a Mr Mike Spencer. It was in generally poor condition and Spencer spent the next two years generally improving the car to a roadworthy condition. The car was then sold to RL MacKenzie in 1982.
The previous owner acquired the car from MacKenzie in April 1986 in Johannesburg, South Africa and used it until early 1990 before deciding to take it off the road and restore it. As a senior mining industry executive his career took priority over cars and the to be restored Aston Martin travelled with his family across the world, firstly to the USA in 1990 and then to Australia in 1997
It wasnt until 2011 that the car was finally placed with a specialist to be restored. That task was entrusted to Jaguar and Aston Martin specialists, Concours Sportscar Restoration in Tuggerah just north of Sydney.
The car underwent a concours standard nut and bolt restoration and it was painstakingly restored to its former glory over a three year period.
The body was in reasonably good condition, however, it was fitted with a new boot skin, door skins and repairs were completed to both rear wheel arches during restoration.
Every mechanical component was disassembled and either refurbished or replaced. All of the instruments were refurbished. All of the bright work has been re-chromed and the trim restored. The interior and soft top have been completely retrimed to the highest standard.
The car has been restored in its original colour scheme of blue haze with a blue leather interior. The previous owner opted to have the soft top finished in blue rather than the original grey which really suits the car.
When the current owner acquired the car in 2015 the restoration had only just been completed. Therefore, it required some post restoration bugs to be ironed out, which was undertaken by the Classic Car Clinic at Biggera Waters on the Gold Coast.
This car is part of a significant Aston Martin collection and it has been kept in a climate controlled garage over the last 10 years. It has only been used sparingly in that time and today the odometer reads 1,076 miles, which is the mileage that the car has travelled since it was restored.
The car was exhibited at Motorclassica in October 2015, where it was incredibly well received. At that time Motorclassica was Australias leading classic car show and concours delegance.
Even though it has been some 10 years now since the restoration was completed, this Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupe still presents as a freshly restored car. In fact, its presentation would be better than the day its restoration was completed, given the owners pedantic nature and attention to detail.
This car is simply magnificent and must be one of the best surviving examples of this highly sought after and collectible Aston Martin in the world.
Timeless elegance is perfectly embodied by the Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupé. Finished in its original colour scheme of blue haze with a blue leather interior, the colour combination beautifully enhances the cars presence. The deep blue paintwork is in exceptional condition, presenting as though it were applied yesterday, with a mirror like finish that retains remarkable depth and high gloss. The bright work and painted wire wheels provide a striking contrast to the bodywork, completing the cars outstanding presentation.
The painted wheels are like new and are shod with period correct Dunlop Road Speed tyres size 6.0H16.
The external trim is minimalistic and quite delicate. Its noted feature is the horizontal slatted trade marque DB2 front grill. All the bright work on the car is, as one would expect, in beautiful condition. The same can be said for all the lights and lenses, which present similarly well. The glass is also in excellent condition with no scratches evident.
The interior of this car is equally stunning as the exterior. Everything essentially presents like new. The leather upholstery, which is soft and supple, is free from blemishes. The seats are comfortable and provide ample support. The wooden dashboard is understated yet elegant and presents exceptionally well. All the instruments are crisp and clear, and during our test drive they appeared to be in proper working order. The carpets likewise present as new, completing the cabins refined appearance.
The car has never seen rain since it was restored and the soft top has only ever been raised for cleaning and photos! It also presents like new.
We were keen to discover whether the car would drive as well as it looks. It starts easily, even from cold, and quickly settles into a smooth, steady idle. As with all cars of this vintage, allowing a brief warm-up before setting off is advisable. Once on the road, the car does not disappoint. The engine revs freely and feels strong, the gear changes are smooth, and it keeps pace effortlessly with modern traffic. The suspension is firm yet compliant, absorbing road imperfections with ease, while the brakes bring the car to a confident, straight stop when required.
Whilst the car has been used sparingly in the last 10 years, it has been regularly maintained by the Classic Car Clinic and in more recent times by SJ Classics.
A thick and expansive history file accompanies the car, including a copy of the original factory records, documentation from its time in the UK and South Africa, as well as extensive documentation, receipts and photographs from the restoration. The car has its original jack and foot pump in the boot, a mallet and crank handle mounted under the bonnet in the engine bay, as well as a spare wheel under the boot floor. Whilst Aston Martin produced some wonderful cars in their early years, business was always a struggle and the company was severely disrupted during both World War I and II. The company went bankrupt on more than one occasion and has endured many different owners throughout its history.
David Brown acquired Aston Martin in February 1947 and the first car produced during his ownership was the Aston Martin 2 Litre Sports, later known as the DB1, which was built in extremely limited numbers from 1948 to 1950. This was succeeded by the Aston Martin DB2 in 1950, which featured a new double overhead cam straight six engine of 2.6 litre (2580 cc) capacity, and was a car that really put post war Aston Martin on the map. Some 411 cars were built from 1950 to 1953, of which circa 100 were the convertible or drophead coupes. Its successor, known as the DB2/4, was first shown at the London Motor Show in 1953 and production started soon thereafter. Initially the car had the same engine as its predecessor, however, it was enlarged to 2,922cc in April 1954. Compared to the DB2 the DB2/4 had an extended roof line with a larger rear window, a one piece curved windscreen and real bumper bars. The biggest difference between the two cars was inside the cabin where the successor had far more room withtwo small occasional rear seats. The DB2/4 sold well through until 1957. In total 764 DB2/4s were built which included 565 of the Mk Is and 199 of the Mk IIs. The biggest change for the Mk II was that the bodies were made in-house by the recently acquired Tickford Coachbuilding Works in Newport Pagnell, otherwise the differences between the Mk I and Mk II were subtle. The DB2/4 was available as a four seat fixed head coupe or two seat drop head coupe from the start of production with a two seat coupe introduced on the Mk II. The DB2/4 MkII was succeeded by the DB MkIII and 551 examples were built from 1957 through until 1959.
The Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupe, particularly with its soft top down, is arguably the most elegant of the DB2/4 range. There were only 101 DB2/4 Drophead Coupe Mk Is and 17 or 18 DB2/4 Drophead Coupe Mk IIs.
The David Brown era was arguably Aston Martins finest with the company winning LeMans in 1959 and the iconic early DB series cars of the 1950s paving the way for the legendary DB4, DB5 and DB6 models of the 1960s.

ASTON MARTIN DB2/4

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this Australian delivered 1924 Bentley 3.0 4½ Litre Vanden Plas Tourer.
Elegant, purposeful and undeniably charismatic, the Bentley 3.0 Litre is widely regarded as one of the most desirable sporting cars of the vintage era.
This well known and highly regarded car is well documented in the fabulous book Vintage Bentleys in Australia written by Clare Hay, Bob Watson, Phillip Schudmak and Tony Johns.
This particular car is noted as having a delivery date of August 1924 (the 31st July 1924 according to the Vintage Bentley Register) and it arrived into Australia in October 1924.
The Vintage Bentley Register states: According to the original Vanden Plas Coachbuilder records, this car was originally fitted with Body No. 1068 with a 10 10 wheelbase standard Open Touring Body; Design copied at Bentley Works 3rd April; buff/black; 8/1924. Michael Hay, in his book Bentley: The Vintage Years, 1997, states: Vanden Plas body no. 1068. New BA 741 419 S/col 737 G/box 1375 (B?).
The first owner was EM & Jas. M Pittendrigh from the inner Melbourne suburb of Toorak in Victoria. The car was first registered as 63167. By 1934 the car was owned by Stanley Edwards from Victoria. It passed through a number of subsequent owners in Victoria before being acquired by Jim Duncan from Victoria and later Noosa in Queensland in 1965. Duncan used the car regularly attending various Bentley Drivers Club events and rallies as well as the 1996 Targa Tasmania.
Unfortunately, the car was involved in an accident in 1999 during Duncans ownership. This was the catalyst to fully restore the car, which involved fitting a new body that was built by Rod Warriner. The new body incorporated a taller radiator and bulkhead to compliment the 4½ Litre engine that was previously fitted to the car. The work was completed and the car was back on the road in 2001.
The car was shown at the 2001 Noosa Beach Classic Car Show where it won Best pre 1950 Car and Best Car of the Show.
Duncan sold his beloved Bentley in 2010 after 45 years of ownership. The car returned to Melbourne and was acquired by the current owner in 2017. Throughout his ownership this wonderful Bentley has continued to be used and enjoyed. It is often seen at Bentley Drivers Club events and rallies.
Few cars capture the spirit of vintage motoring better than a Bentley 3.0 4½ Litre Vanden Plas Tourer. Developed during the formative years of Bentley Motors, it combined robust engineering, impressive performance and lightweight sporting coachwork to create a motor car that quickly established Bentleys reputation as a force to be reckoned with both on the road and on the racetrack. They are a drivers car first and foremost!
Today this car presents and drives exceptionally well. We love the fact that when Duncan restored/rebuilt the car back in 1999 he chose to have it finished in essentially its original colour of buff/black, which is quite unique and absolutely striking. It is not known what the original upholstery colour was for the car, however, we think red was a perfect choice.
This Bentley presents with just the right amount of patina, consistent with a car that was restored 25 years ago and subsequently maintained whilst it has been used and enjoyed.
The paint work presents well, with minor wear and tear evident. Overall it has retained a strong depth of colour and remains vibrant. All of the external trim, including the brightwork presents similarly well.
The black wire wheels and plated Bentley spinners are in good condition and present well. The wheels are shod with Goodrich Silverttown 5.00 / 6.00 21 tyres all around.
Inside the cabin this car is also beautifully presented. The condition of the interior is consistent with the exterior. Everything is just nice, showing light wear consistent with use. The red upholstery is soft and supple and presents without any significant flaws. The seats are comfortable and install confidence you would feel that way after a long day behind the wheel. The carpets are in generally good condition. The instruments and controls are well presented and look to be in working order, though the black finish around the bezels on some of the instruments is chipped.
The soft top, which is in good condition, is for emergency purposes only and some would say Bentley drivers should be made stern enough that it should never go up! It fits quite well and is relatively easy to put up and down. The cover that fits over the soft top when down fits well and is in good condition. There are two tonneau covers, one front and one rear, which also fit well and are also in good condition.
Driving a Bentley 3.0 4½ Litre Vanden Plas Tourer is not simply about travelling from one destination to another. It is about becoming part of the machine, mastering its controls and experiencing motoring as it was during one of the greatest eras in automotive history. Powerful, engaging and immensely charismatic, it remains one of the finest vintage driving experiences available today. There is no doubt that this car achieves all of that and more!
The car goes hard and it has the most fantastic and very distinctive baritone exhaust note. For its day this was a fast car, but even today its performance is lively and the car has absolutely no trouble keeping up with modern traffic. The steering is relatively heavy at low speeds but becomes lighter and wonderfully communicative once on the move. Every movement of the front wheels can be felt through the steering wheel, creating a direct connection between driver and the road. Background
The Bentley motor car company was founded back in 1919 by brothers WO and HM Bentley. The Bentley brothers were involved in the motor industry having acquired the agency to sell French built DFP (Doriot, Flandrin & Parant) cars in 1912, however, they desperately wanted to build their own cars.
WO Bentley had established himself as a brilliant engineer during World War I when the French made DFP in which he competed, achieved a number of wins in various races and hill climbs. He was one of the first engineers who realised the advantage of using aluminium to create pistons. W.O Bentley was discharged from the army in 1919 and he set about creating his own car. His experience with aircraft engines proved an excellent starting point. He was also heavily influenced by two pre-war designs, the 1914 Grand Prix Mercedes and the 1913 Coupe de lAuto Peugeot.
Bentley developed a 3.0 litre monobloc engine which featured four valves per cylinder, twin spark plugs and twin magnetos. He made extensive use of aluminium and magnesium which were quite exotic materials in the 1920s, especially for road going cars. The first prototype, EXP1, was tested by The Autocar and received a glowing report. It was described as For the man who wants a true sporting type of light-bodied car for use on a Continental tour where speed limits are not meant to be observed the 3 Litre Bentley is undoubtedly the car par excellence.
The second prototype, EXP2, made its debut at the 1919 Olympia motor show. The new Bentley 3.0 Litre attracted a lot of attention however it wasnt until September 1921 that the first model rolled of the production line. Between the 1919 motor show and September 1921 much work had been done to further refine the chassis. EXP2 was the first Bentley to record a race win at Brooklands on May 16th 1921. Bentley continued to use it for further testing in 1921 and 1922 before it was sold in 1923. EXP2 still exists today and is the oldest surviving Bentley.
Initially, production of the Bentley 3.0 Litre was slow but they got the formula right and their cars proved to be luxurious, reliable and fast thus attracting buyers from the elite of society. it didnt take long for the order books to be filled with names of wealthy and aristocratic clients, including Prince George (later the Duke of Kent), the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) and the Duke of York, later King George VI.
Just like other manufactures in that period, Bentley supplied the engine, drive train, suspension and chassis, letting the client decide which coachbuilder they wanted to use to supply the body. Bentley offered three versions of their 3.0 Litre and they were identified by the colour of the badge on the radiator the blue label, the red label and the green label. The blue label was the standard engine, the red label was powered by a higher compression engine and the green label was the high-performance model. Bentley had great confidence in their cars and offered a five year warranty on the blue and red label model. The green label, however, only came with a one year warranty because it really was a race car.
The cars were also incredibly successful on the race track with Bentley achieving the ultimate success winning Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930. The Bentley 3.0 Litre was able to beat the the much smaller and more nimble Bugattis, prompting Ettore Bugatti to call it the fastest lorry in the world.
The difficult economic times in the late 1920s had a major impact on Bentley and they stopped motor racing soon after winning Le Mans in 1930 and ultimately fell into receivership in 1931. Rolls-Royce acquired the assets of Bentley in late 1931. In this period Bentley produced some fabulous motor cars including the 3.0 Litre, 4½ Litre, Blower Bentley, 6½ Litre and 8.0 Litre models that are all today highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors all over the world. The first new Bentley produced following Rolls Royces acquisition was the Bentley 3½ Litre which evolved into the Bentley 4¼ Litre. Bentleys of this era are also known as Derby Bentleys as they were built at Rolls Royces factory located in Derby in the north of England.
The Bentley 3.0 Litre was built from 1921 through until 1929 and in total 1,622 examples were built. This included three experimental models, 1,088 3.0 Litre models, 513 Speed Tourers and 18 Super Sports.

1924 BENTLEY 3 LITRE

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale this absolutely stunning 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT.
The documentation on file confirms this UK delivered, factory right hand drive example was ordered by Maranello Concessionaires Ltd in Egham By Pass (Surrey) on the 21st March 1972. This E Series Dino was completed and despatched from the Ferrari factory in Maranello on the 26th April 1972.
The car left the factory in the unique and stunning colour of Giallo Dino (paint code 20-Y-348 Salchi) with a Nero Plastica (black vinyl trim code 161) interior. The car was ordered with the optional electric windows.
Many people think Ferraris should be red, however, Dinos were delivered new in just about every colour of the rainbow! In fact, according Matthias Bartz Dino Compendium, Dinos were delivered in 52 colours! Interestingly, only 21% of the total production of the Dino 206 GT / 246 GT and 246 GTS were finished in Rosso Corsa.
Dinos carry colour exceptionally well and many were finished in different hues and its always refreshing to see one finished in one of the less obvious colour choices. Only 35 Dinos (246 GT & and 246 GTS) were delivered new in the unique and stunning colour of Giallo Dino and we have two of them, including this car, in this country. This colour looks absolutely beautiful in the photos, however, we think it is even more impressive in the flesh. It is elegant and sophisticated.
Maranello Concessionaires delivered the car to dealer Sidney Marcus Ltd on Dorset Square in London on 16th May 1972. Further documentation on file suggests the first owner of the car was Mr B Cassini Esq from Chertsey, Surrey. The car was first registered in the UK on the 16th August 1972.
The UK Vehicle Registration Documentation on file dated 11th May 1983, states the car had 4 former keepers since February 1976. That same document notes James Fitzgerald from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire as the current owner and Pat Crawfords from Saltash, Cornwall as the previous owner. Crawfords acquired the car on 30th November 1981. He only owned the car for a short period before selling it to Fitzgerald on the 21st February 1983. At that time the car was registered as VXA 324L.
Fitzgerald sold the car to John Rossi from Greystanes, Sydney Australia on the 7th November 1984. It was subsequently imported into Australia on the 23rd December 1984, arriving on board the ship the Tolaga Bay.
The car was sparingly used during Rossis ownership and it was sold to Oldtimer Australia in July 2004. At that time the car was finished in Rosso Corsa and the odometer read 76,223 miles.
The car required recommissioning and it was then sold to the current owner in July 2005. At that time the odometer read 76,423 miles.
After having enjoyed his Dino for a number of years, the decision was made in 2012 to restore the car back to how it left the factory all those years ago. This included returning the car to its original colour of Giallo Dino.
The cosmetic restoration was entrusted to the very talented Steve Cahun from Concourse Restorations in Geelong, Victoria. The mechanicals were the responsibility of classic Ferrari specialist Marc Jones from Enzotech, based at Caboolture on Queenslands Sunshine Coast and the trim work given to Peter Blakemore from Blakemores Automotive Upholstery in Ninderry, also on Queenslands Sunshine Coast. The restoration was project managed by Oldtimer Australia.
Jones stripped the car and removed the engine as well as all other mechanicals and the body/rolling chassis was subsequently sent to Victoria. The body was removed from the chassis and stripped to bare metal for the necessary repairs. The chassis was placed on a jig and measured to ensure it remained correct to original specification. Once the metal work was completed the car was repainted. All the chrome and external trim was also refurbished and the car subsequently reassembled.
All the mechanicals, including the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes and more were stripped, assessed and rebuilt.
This restoration was a major project and everything was either refurbished or replaced to ensure the car was restored to a very high standard.
The project was finally completed in 2020.
Since then, the car has been used occasionally and at time of photographing the odometer read 77,111 miles. One of the last invoices related to the restoration from 2019 notes an odometer reading of 76,805 miles.
This wonderful Dino made its first public appearance at the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival in 2023, taking home the Shannons Rolling Art award. Its second public appearance was at the 2024 Noosa Concours dElegance.
Given the cars limited use since it was restored, it is not surprising that it still presents like a fresh restoration.
This is obviously a car well known to us at Oldtimer Australia, however, we were like kids in a lolly shop when the truck arrived to our showroom to drop it off.
The paint is in excellent condition in both finish and presentation. On close inspection, the quality of the restoration is immediately evident. The paint has been applied to a very high standard, with a deep, even gloss and excellent clarity throughout. Out in the sun the pale yellow seems to glow across the cars sculpted curves, perfectly accentuating the flowing Pininfarina design.
All the bright work, badges and other external trim is also in excellent condition, complimenting the paintwork perfectly. The lights and all the lenses are all clean and in excellent condition.
All the glass on the car is most likely original and in good condition. There is a very small area in the left lower corner of the front windscreen that is showing signs of delamination. It is almost hidden by the rubber, but it is there.
Lift the rear lid and the engine bay presents every bit as impressively as the exterior. The compact mid mounted V6 engine sits proudly on display, its intricate mechanical details clean, crisp, and beautifully arranged. The restoration has been carried out to a very high standard, with all components either correctly refurbished or replaced as required. The cam covers and ancillaries are finished to an excellent standard, their surfaces sharp and well defined, while correct finishes and coatings have been faithfully maintained throughout.
Under the front lid the correct spare wheel is stowed, sitting snugly within its recess. The surrounding heavy duty plastic mouldings are often a weak point on a Dino and often let the presentation of a freshly restored car down. On this car everything is beautifully presented.
The Cromodora wheels are in excellent condition with no signs of any damage or kerb rash. They are shod with period correct Michelin XWX tyres, size 205/70VR14 on all four corners. The tyres are date stamped 5217 (week 52, 2017) and are still in very good condition. The Dino branded centre caps are also in excellent condition.
We have had the car on the hoist and it presents as well underneath as it does on top.
Inside the cabin is just spectacular. Blakemores work is world class and the interior of this Dino is just sublime. The seats are in excellent condition, they are comfortable, and provide ample support. The seating position in a Dino always takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you are it is quite comfortable. The door cards, centre console and the carpets are all similarly well presented. The dashboard is also in excellent condition and all the instruments are crisp and clean. Everything is as you would expect it to be in a freshly restored car.
Theres no doubt that the Ferrari Dino 246 GT is one of the most beautiful cars ever built, but they are also exhilarating to drive. From the moment you are seated behind the wheel, that view forward is framed by the front guards that rise into your eyeline. Starting a Dino is no different from any other carburetted car from the 1960s and 1970s. You turn the ignition on and allow the fuel pumps some time to provide the carburettors with sufficient fuel. You then pump the accelerator a few times before turning the key further to start the car. This Dino fires up easily and the 2,418cc V6 engine quickly settles into a smooth idle. Theres a subtle rasp in the exhaust note, layered with a faint Italian singing quality that hints at whats to come as revs rise.
Driving a Ferrari Dino 246 GT is best understood as a fully analogue conversation between driver, machine and the road light, mechanical, and intensely involved. It is certainly not the fastest car but that is not what a Dino is all about. The Dino doesnt overwhelm with power, rather it draws you in through balance, sound and feel, creating a driving experience that is as emotional as it is engaging.
Like most classic Ferraris, the more you drive a Dino and allow the engine and gearbox to warm up properly, the better they are to drive. This one is no exception and after half an hour behind the wheel once everything is warmed up the car drives superbly.
When you clear the traffic and find a nice open road you really do appreciate what an absolutely fabulous car this is to drive. The engine has plenty of power on tap and it responds instantly to the slightest movement of the throttle. The gear changes are smooth and precise. It is mechanical and deliberate, requiring care and precision, but rewarding that effort with a satisfying sense of connection every time a gear engages cleanly. The steering is beautifully direct, with just enough weight and feedback to let you read the surface beneath you. The car is very tight on the road, with no rattles or squeaks.
The current owner has thoroughly enjoyed his 20+ years of ownership of this Ferrari Dino 246 GT and the journey that it has taken him on, but he feels that the time right for it to move to a new home. He is simply not using the car and life is taking him in a different direction.
Dinos come and go, but freshly restored cars are hard to find and finding one in Giallo Dino is like bumping into a unicorn.

Apple, Coca-Cola, McDonalds and Nike are brands recognisable the world over. So is Ferrari and interestingly the iconic Italian luxury sports car manufacturer was named The Worlds Strongest Brand in the 2019 Brand Finance Global 500 Report.
Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1939 out of Alfa Romeos race division as Auto Avio Costruzioni the company built its first car in 1940. The Second World War halted Ferraris dream, which was finally realised in 1947, when the first car bearing his name, the Ferrari 125S, was built. From that day on Ferrari race cars dominated the world over, winning race after race and many world championships in Formula One, sports car racing and endurance racing. Ferrari built exclusive sports cars for the road too, but in the early days, this was primarily to fund his motor racing!
The Cavallino Rampate or prancing horse was the symbol chosen by Ferrari and like the golden arches it is recognised by just about every man, woman and child on the planet!
The Ferrari road cars from the 1940s and early to mid-1950s were built in very small numbers and it was not until the introduction of the 250 series cars that production numbers increased. Almost 1,000 Ferrari 250 GTEs were built from 1959 1963. The 250 series also produced some of the most special Ferraris ever built, including the Ferrari 250LM, 250 SWB, 250 California Spider and of course the 250 GTO. The 250 series cars were superseded by the 275 series cars, the 330 series cars and later the 365 series cars. The nomenclature designated the cubic capacity of each cylinder. So a Ferrari 330 was powered by a 12 cylinder engine of 3967 cc capacity.
Ferraris iconic Dino was first shown to the world as a prototype at the 1965 Paris Motor Show. The car morphed into the 206 GT of which only 150 cars were built from 1967 to 1969. This car was built with an all alloy body and had a 1,987cc V6 engine. In 1969 the 246 GT was released, which whilst a similar looking car in many ways was actually quite different. The car sat 3 taller than its predecessor and the body was now built from steel. Mechanically the new car was powered by a 2,418cc V6 engine. Enzo was keen to tackle Porsche head on and to do this he needed to increase production. The Dino was a hit and incredibly 3,569 of these cars were built from 1969 to 1974, 2,295 246 GTs and 1,274 246 GTSs.
Concerned at how the world would accept his lower priced, affordable 6 cylinder sports car and concerned that a cheaper car may diminish the Ferrari brand, Enzo Ferrari decided the car would not carry the badge of the prancing horse. Rather it would simply be known as a Dino to also commemorate the life of his son who designed the 6 cylinder engine.
Today the world knows the Dino as a Ferrari, and a real one at that! These beautiful cars are adored by car people across the world and good ones are most sought after.

1972 FERRARI DINO 246 GT

A new arrival to Oldtimer Australia is this majestic Australian delivered 1921 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Silver Ghost.
The build sheets on file confirm that this particular chassis was on test on the 20th April 1921, off test and delivered to Lillie Hall on the 13th August 1921. The car was despatched shortly thereafter to be loaded on the ship the SS Euripidies bound for Sydney.
The car was sold through Dalgety & Co, the Australian Rolls-Royce agent in Sydney to a Mr AP Mullens of Strathfield, Sydney in New South Wales. Mullins engaged the services of coach builders Smith & Waddington of Camperdown, Sydney to build a body for the car. He decided the car should have a California hardtop style body, similar to what he had seen on cars during his recent visit to the USA.
Mullens used the car regularly, often driving it work which was a short trip of around 6 miles each way. When Mullens wasnt using the Silver Ghost his wife would use the services of their part time chauffeur, Harry Wilson, to drive her around in the car.
Unfortunately, their marriage didnt last and when they separated Mrs Mullens (née Todman) kept the house, the Silver Ghost and the chauffeur! In the late 1920s Mrs Mullens decided it was time for a new car. She purchased a Cadillac and the Silver Ghost was parked up. Unfortunately, the Cadillac had lots of issues and a decision was made to recondition the Silver Ghost and return it to service.
For practical and social reasons it was commonplace to rebody prestige cars back in this period. In 1935 Mrs Mullins decided that she wanted a new Silver Ghost and she engaged the services of Sydney based coach builders Jackson, Jones and Collins Ltd to build a new seven seat aluminium limousine style body for the car. Whilst the new body was being built, Rolls-Royce agent Appleby & Ward went about overhauling the chassis from front to back. The car was painted dark blue with black mudguards and the period photos on file show a grand and very regal looking limousine!
Mrs Mullens kept the car until after World War II. In 1945 it was sold by Appleby and Ward on her behalf to WH Bull Pty Ltd, undertakers from Newtown in central Sydney. It was only used by them for a short period and it then passed through a few owners in quick succession, before being acquired by Mr RJ Field from Leura in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales in November 1950.
Field intended to use the car as a tourist hire car in the Blue Mountains, however, the licensing authority wouldnt give him the necessary approvals to do so. Field then sold the car to a poultry farmer, Granny Brown, from Kellyville, Sydney. The condition of the Silver Ghost was slowly deteriorating and its subsequent owner, Mr Zane Yalaski, intended to refresh the car mechanically. He had started to strip the engine but was unfortunately killed when he collided with a train (whilst driving another car!) at a rail crossing. Mr George Williams from Glebe, Sydney acquired the car from Yalaskis estate. Unfortunately, Williams made no progress in getting the Silver Ghost back on the road. He had a shortage of storage space and as a result was a motivated seller when he was approached by Rolls-Royce enthusiast John Gillies in October 1960.
Gillies was not a fan of the current body on the car and soon had it removed. The car remained a rolling chassis for many years until in 1970 Gillies had the opportunity to acquire a 7 passenger touring body (circa 1927, understood to have been built by Queensland Motor Bodies in Brisbane) that was fitted to a 1913 Silver Ghost belonging to Mr Graham Wilkinson from Brisbane.
Gillies quickly had the car back on the road and Titania (named after the Queen of the Fairies) was finished in time to be driven to Canberra in June 1970 for the Rolls-Royce Owners Club Federal Rally. It is understood that Gillies fully restored the car during his ownership. He was then able to use and enjoy the car, often attending various Rolls-Royce Owners Club of Australia events and rallies.
In 1978 the car was put up for sale and acquired by George Sicklinger from Emerald, which is a small country town some 270 km west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. For the next 23 years the car remained in Emerald. It was used sparingly over the years, with its longest trip understood to be a return trip to Springsure and a journey of around 168 miles. The cars noted claim to fame during Sicklingers ownership was that it was occasionally used to carry some high profile dignities around the district, including Prime Ministers Whitlam and Fraser.
The current owner acquired this Silver Ghost in May 2001 and decided to rename the car to Sir Roderick or Roddy for short, after the famous ghost in Gilbert and Sullivans comic opera Ruddigore.
The Silver Ghost hadnt been used for a while so it was decided to have it transported to vintage car specialist Joe Wilson in Sumner Park, Brisbane. After some light recommissioning work it was deemed the car was ready to be used and enjoyed as its makers intended. It was soon a regular attendee on various Rolls-Royce Owners Club and Vintage Car Club of Queensland events and rallies. The car successfully completed a 1,250 mile trip from Brisbane to Longreach, Queensland (and back) in 2002. The car ran well, though it was using a considerable amount of oil.
Later in 2002, Roddys next adventure was a trip to Armidale in New South Wales. Whilst the car ran well it became obvious that the car was mechanically tired and it was time for an engine rebuild. The car was taken off the road and the work began. The engine was removed from the car and subsequently rebuilt. With the engine out, the chassis was stripped and repainted along with the axles, petrol tank, linkages and anything else that needed a refresh. At the same time a decision was made to repaint the car in its current colour of Royal Plum with black guards. A new hood was also fitted and the interior was retrimmed.
All this work was completed in time for the 2004 Rolls-Royce Owners Club of Australias Federal Rally in Melbourne.
Over the last 20 years, this Silver Ghost has been used and enjoyed exactly as its makers intended. It has successfully completed some remarkable journeys along the way, acquitting itself admirably wherever it was taken.
Some of its major adventures include the 100th Anniversary of the Silver Ghost celebrations in England and Scotland in 2007, a trip from Brisbane to Darwin and back to Brisbane (a 4,200 mile trip) in 2011, two trips to Tasmania and various Rolls-Royce Owners Club of Australia Federal Rallies and events.
In 2017 and after 17 years of enjoyable motoring, the car was taken to David Fords restoration workshop in Stanthorpe, Queensland, for some loving care and attention. New valves, seats and guides were installed, the governor was repaired, new springs and rollers were installed, the door hinges were repaired and the bodywork was refurbished.
In April 2023 the car went back to Ford for a major service and mechanical work, which included fitting a new clutch.
Since that time the car has only been used sparingly.
This 1921 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost has been an integral part of the current owners life for the past 25 years. He has incredibly fond memories from his time with this fabulous car, but has made the difficult decision that the time is right for it to pass on to its next custodian.
Today this Silver Ghost still presents really well, particularly considering that it is a car that has been driven. From say a meter the paint looks stunning, accentuated by its unique and fabulous colour scheme, however, on closer inspection there are some defects. There are some stone chips, cracks and blemishes here and there, though it is the black guards that present with the most wear and tear. The bright work is subtle, though the tall, upright and perfectly proportioned polished nickel radiator shell rises proudly at the front of the car with an almost architectural presence. Crowning the radiator is the famous Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. Its overall condition is very good.
The interior presents nicely and its everywhere you look there are signs of meticulous craftsmanship. The button tufted upholstery is in good condition with no rips, tears or damage. Ahead of the driver, the dashboard is a work of art in itself. Finished in polished timber, it is adorned with an array of finely crafted instruments and controls, each with a purposeful and elegant appearance. All the instruments and controls are working, with the exception of the speedo. This car has a right hand gear shift and the tall lever is housed within a distinctive metal gate. The gears are clearly numbered with visible slots that physically guides the movement of the gear lever through the shift pattern.
The current owner prefers open top motoring, hence, the two tonneau covers are often used. The car does have a soft top, though it has rarely seen the light of day. It is somewhat of an exercise to get it up, but once you know how it can be raised and lowered expeditiously. The soft top is in good condition, though the small rear screen is coming loose. The large trunk fitted to rear of the car is currently full of tools and miscellaneous spare parts.
Access to the engine bay is from either side of the long bonnet, beneath which sits the imposing 7.4-litre (7,428 cc) inline six cylinder engine. Visually, the engine bay is every bit as impressive as the mechanical specification. Everything is relatively neat, clean and tidy.
This car was never intended to be a concours winner, rather its strength is its mechanical condition. The current owner has done everything he could to make sure this Silver Ghost is a reliable car and we can confirm that he succeeded in that.
Starting the car is not a simple as just turning the key, in fact it doesnt even have a key, but when you understand and follow the starting procedure it isnt that complicated. If you are familiar with vintage cars you will understand! You need to turn the battery isolator off, set the ignition timing and throttle controls, set the mixture control, prime the carburettor, turn the fuel pump on, turn the ignition on and you are ready to start the car. The starter button is a foot control on the firewall. Follow the steps and the car will start easily and it immediately settles into a smooth idle. The first thing you notice is how quiet the engine is. You must let it warm up before driving.
From the moment you settle behind the large steering wheel and glance across the long bonnet, there is an overwhelming sense of theatre. The upright driving position and commanding view ahead make you feel more like a chauffeur or captain than a conventional driver. There is a wonderful awareness of the cars scale and presence, and the vast bonnet stretching toward the radiator seems to disappear into the horizon.
This is a car that engages all of your senses and the overall driving experience is extremely rewarding. The car has more than enough power and torque, which ensures that it will easily keep up with modern traffic and cruise the motorways in comfort. The gated gear selector requiring measured movements and the non-synchromesh gearbox rewards patience and technique, making each shift feel satisfying and deliberate . . . particularly when you get it right!
The steering is quite direct, though heavy at parking speed. Being a 1921 model, this car is fitted with two wheel (rear) brakes only. The brakes work, but the pedal is heavy and it requires a firm push to pull the car up.
Indicators are fitted for enhanced driver safety. They are operated by a switch under the dash.
Driving this car is an event and most memorable of all is the occasion it creates. People wave, smile and stare. Driving a Silver Ghost is not simply transportation, it is stepping back into an era when motoring was an adventure and the process of driving itself was every bit as important as the destination.
Accompanying this car are two tonneau covers (one front and one rear), side curtains, two spare wheels (one mounted on either side of the car), two tool kits (see photos), miscellaneous tools & spare parts (in the trunk), an excellent history file which contains the original build sheets as well as the original Owners Manual.

1921 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER GHOST

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a rare, factory right hand drive, 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL with a factory 4-speed manual gearbox.
Mercedes-Benz only built 5,196 250SLs (from 1966 - 1968), compared to 19,831 230SLs (from 1963 - 1967) and 23,885 280SLs (from 1967 - 1971), making it by far the rarest of all the Pagodas.
It is not known how many were built with a manual gearbox, however, what we do know is that a factory right hand drive Mercedes-Benz 250SL with a manual gearbox is a rare car.
The Data Card on file shows the date of delivery as the 8th May 1967 and confirms this factory right hand drive example was delivered new to Great Britain. It also confirms this car was originally painted Tunis Beige (paint code 462) with a matching hard top. The interior upholstery code is 116, which is caviar coloured seats (trim code 2100) and black carpets (carpet code 6125). The soft top was originally black (soft top code 720).
We have verified that the ID plate, stamped chassis number, engine number, data plate as well as body number stampings on the bonnet, gearbox support, under the soft top lid and the hard top are all correct and matching.
This car has an excellent history file with ownership noted back to 1977, when it was owned by Ian Shanks Jeffrey from Falkirk in Scotland, UK. There is email correspondence on file between the current owner and Stephen Jeffrey (Ian Jeffreys stepson), who wrote that he understood the previous owner to be a lady by the name of Sylvia Anderson who sold the car to his stepfather because it was too fast for her! The car was then registered as SA505, which is confirmed by an old UK V5 on file.
In 1983 the car was sold to John Kennedy from nearby Alloa and at that time it was registered as NMS537F. Kennedy owned the car for just over a year and it was then sold to Martin Swist from Fairfield, Connecticut, USA. The car remained in continuous ownership for the next 33 years, before being acquired by a well-known Australian enthusiast and collector in 2017. There is an Import Approval on file dated 13th July 2017.
The current owner acquired this Mercedes-Benz 250SL through the Classic Throttle Shop in Sydney in April 2022. It was a lovely car, however, the current owner is pedantic and wanted to improve its overall presentation.
One thing led to another and the end result was that he spent a small fortune on his 250SL. The car was stripped and the body repaired and painted by Styling Automotive in Yeerongpilly (Brisbane). The bright work was rechromed and the external trim refurbished or replaced.
Classic car restorer Paolo Piazza Mussos Garagisti in Brisbane was tasked with the project managing the restoration work and the reassembly of the car.
Mechanically, the engine was found to be strong, so it was not rebuilt. All the ancillaries were assessed and refurbished as required, including the Bosch mechanical fuel injection pump. The final recommissioning and mechanical works were completed by classic Mercedes-Benz specialists Three Point Classic in Brisbane. They carried out a range of work, installing a refurbished rear differential and a new clutch kit.
The interior was in excellent condition and it was only the timber that was refurbished. All the instruments were checked and repaired/refurbished. The original, period correct Becker Europa radio is a nice touch and it is in good working order.
The owner was heavily involved in the project and chose to purchase all of the new parts directly from suppliers including Niemoller, Authentic Classic and others.
The end result is a beautifully presented Mercedes-Benz 250SL.
The Paul Bracq designed Type W113 Mercedes-Benz is an automotive icon that carries colour exceptionally well. Fortunately, the current owner chose to have this car repainted in its original colour of Tunis Beige, a wonderful period colour that enhances the Pagoda's timeless design and we think is about as good as it gets!
Whilst the project has only recently been completed, the repaint was finished back in 2023. It comes as no surprise that the paintwork remains vibrant and fresh. Its overall presentation is excellent, though we should mention there is a very small mark evident on either side of the soft top cover near the B-pillar. All the panel gaps are excellent. The chrome presents like new and the lights and lenses are in excellent condition.
The soft top, which fits very well, is in excellent condition with no rips or tears and a clear rear window.
For the cold winter months one has the option to fit the factory (original) hard top, which is also in excellent condition, essentially converting the car from a convertible to a coupe. The car looks equally as stunning with the hard top fitted.
The steel wheels with chrome dress rings are in excellent condition with no evidence of any kerb rash or damage. The centre section of the hub caps are painted in the correct body colour and are also in excellent condition. The wheels are shod with Sumitomo tyres, size 195/75/14. These tyres are date stamped 4915 (week 49, 2015) and 4116 (week 41,2016) and they are still in a good condition.
Open the door of the Mercedes-Benz 250 SL and you are greeted by an interior that perfectly reflects the car's character. It is elegant, purposeful and impeccably crafted. The beige upholstery perfectly contrasts the black dash and steering wheel as well as the timber finishes inside the cabin and the Tunis Beige paint work. The upholstery is in very good condition, showing very light wear to the drivers seat. The seats are firm and comfortable. The carpet in both footwells, on the transmission tunnel and rear parcel shelf is clean and in excellent condition. The dash, instruments and controls are a real feature and they all present really well.
The real highlight is of course the delicate gear lever protruding from the transmission tunnel!
Under the bonnet, everything is also immaculate. The spot welds on the panels from the original construction remain in place as do the notches on the front guards adjacent to the headlights. Open the boot and you reveal a space that is very neat, clean and tidy.
At time of photographing the car the odometer read 61,021 km.
From the moment the car arrived at our showroom we were genuinely excited to refamiliarise ourselves with a manual Mercedes-Benz 250SL/280SL.Having sold a manual 280SL a few years ago, we understand how good these cars are with a third pedal!
Starting the car is easy. You insert the key into the ignition, turn the ignition on, wait a couple of seconds for the fuel pump to supply the necessary amount of fuel to the engine and then you turn the key further to start the car. The 2,496cc six cylinder engine fires up easily and quickly settles into a smooth idle. Whilst the engine is warming up we familiarise ourselves with the instruments and controls before gently selecting first gear to take it out onto the open road.
First impressions are really positive. The car feels solid and composed. The straight six goes about its business and the car just cruises with that German efficiency one would expect of a fully sorted Pagoda. Theres no fuss, its just very easy to drive and incredibly smooth. The engine revs willingly through the rev range and after a few short miles you really appreciate the manual gearbox. The light clutch and precise gearshift make the car remarkably easy to drive, while the manual gearbox adds an extra layer of involvement often absent from automatic equipped examples. Each gear change feels deliberate and rewarding, allowing the driver to make the most of the engine's broad spread of torque and flexible performance.
The steering is precise and direct, the suspension feels incredibly tight and there are no rattles or squeaks. The brakes pull the car up efficiently and in a straight line. All the instruments and controls appear to be in good working order.
If you happen to be caught out by the weather whilst you are out for a drive, the soft top can be easily and relatively quickly raised by one person.
The Mercedes-Benz Type W113 Pagodas were never intended to be a sports car, rather a sophisticated, elegant and highly refined grand tourer, however, the manual gearbox most certainly gives it a sporting edge!
Accompanying the car is the original hardtop, spare wheel, tool kit, jack, hard top stand and a very good history file, which contains the data card, historical documents dating back to 1977 as well all the invoices for the recent restoration work.
A change in the current owners circumstances has meant that he has reluctantly decided to sell the car.

Background
Following the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Europes car industry was decimated. In Germany both Daimler and Benz went back to producing cars post-war, however, times were tough. A merger between Daimler and Benz would ensure that both companies survived and following a technical co-operation agreement in 1924, the companies formally merged on the 1st July 1926. Mercedes-Benz was born!
Subsequently, Mercedes-Benz went on to build some of the greatest cars of all time. The cars from Stuttgart bearing the three-pointed star all had one thing in common . . . they were renowned for their technical innovation, build quality, luxury and performance.
In the 1950s Mercedes Benz produced one of the greatest cars of all time the iconic 300SL Gullwing and 300SL Coupe. Whilst fabulous cars, they were very expensive and generally sold to the rich and famous. Mercedes wanted to build a sporting luxury car that still looked classical in the mould of the 300SL, but it had to be affordable and the plan was to build such a car in far greater numbers than the exclusive 300SLs. Enter the Type W121 or 190SL as it became known in the mid 1950s. This model was an outstanding success and circa 25,000 cars were built over the next 8 years of production. The formula worked and Mercedes Benz carried it on with great success in the 1960s with the Type W113 230SL/250SL/280SL models. This evolved into the Type R107/C107 280SL(C)/350SL(C)/380SL(C)/450SL(C) models built throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
The Mercedes-Benz 230SL (Type W113.042) was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963. Production started by June of that year and the car was a resounding success for Mercedes-Benz with 19,831 cars built in just over three and a half years of production.
In late 1966 the Mercedes-Benz 250SL (Type W113.043) was introduced. This model had many subtle improvements, but the most significant was an increase in engine size to 2,496cc giving the car significantly improved performance. The majority of the 5,196 250SLs were built in 1967 before production ceased in early 1968.
By late 1967 the final iteration of the Type W113 cars, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL (Type W113.044) was introduced. The Type M180 engine was bored out to provide a total engine capacity of 2,778cc and a further increase in power and torque over its predecessor. Mercedes-Benz built 23,885 280SLs taking the total number of Type W113 cars built to almost 48,912 over 9 years of production.
The Paul Bracq designed Type W113 Mercedes-Benz is today recognised as an all time classic. In recent years the demand for these cars has skyrocketed and the Mercedes-Benz Pagodas have become highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
